That Kind of Best Friend

They sat next to each other waiting to board their flight. She should have been boarding another flight to D.C. around this time but here she was. Cold case keeping her with the team for just a little bit longer. Keeping her with him just a little bit longer. Little did they know that she had ended things with Pike. The way she felt when Jane called her about the cold case shouldn't be so if she is leaving with the man she loves to D.C. It was time to stop fooling herself.

Jane couldn't stop stealing a glance at her beautiful face. Will he still find life as beautiful once the most beautiful being he knows to date is gone?

She noticed his stares and smiles as he looked away when she turned his way. She couldn't decide if she wanted this case to end as soon as possible or last.

"I am going to miss you" he says.

"I am going to miss you too" she says.

He turns in his seat so he can face her. "You are my best friend Teresa. I don't go a day without thinking of what you are to me. I meant what I said on that beach."

She just stares at him. He can't figure out what she is thinking.

"You know, there are moments I have no idea what you are thinking. When you give me that stare that you are giving me right now, is one of those moments. I can't read minds no matter what people say. But there is obviously something you want me to know. Something you want me to understand."

She smiles. "It's funny Jane. Those are the moments I want you to be able to read my mind." The smile is gone after she says this.

"Tell me. Just like you tell me all the little things. Just talk to me and I promise I will do the same. No games."

She turns in her seat just like he did. Now face to face.

"I don't want to be the best friend that you share talks and experiences with sometimes. I want it to be every time. I want to be that best friend that spends every waking moment entwined with you. In the good and bad. Through the motions and dangers of our occupation. No restrictions at all." She takes a long breath and looks back at him.

He smiles. "I feel the same. I just wasn't sure you felt the same way. You don't look for relationships that last. Well until now." He laughs. "The first one since Greg and you are moving away. It just happened so fast."

"I was waiting for you Jane. We went back to our regular routine and you seemed happy with that."

He sighs and says "there were moments I thought you wanted something more like I did. I guess I was just scared of moving on. I am sorry."

"I am sorry too Jane. I was telling my heart what to want. You can't do that. The heart wants what the heart wants."

"From the way you are speaking, I would think you ended things with Pike."

"I did. I can't leave my heart in Texas now can I?"

He has a big smile on his face and confesses. "I love you too."

She blushes and smiles "I didn't say I love you!"

"More than words beautiful. I just had to look back at what you have done for me. Look at you now as we talk like nothing else matters. Because nothing does if you aren't there to share it with."

"I have loved you for so long Patrick. I just want us to be. Let's just be."

He smiles at the mention of his first name.

They both lean in. He kisses her nose and says "I love you."

"I love you too."

Their lips meet. They hold hands as they continue to kiss ever so lovingly.

They hear a cough from Fischer standing next to Cho. The two agents are smiling. Cho says "kissing is permitted on the plane that they are about to close the door on. Shall we?"

Jane and Lisbon blush as they stand up and gather their things. They board the plane hand in hand.

On the plane, they kiss once more and start talking about the case.

Well you know how it goes. Jane has a theory and Lisbon makes little of it but will go along with it. They banter some more, laugh, and so on.
