Chapter One

Burgess, Pennsylvania: 1712

Nestled beside a lush forest sat a little town known as Burgess. The population was small, and was very close-knit. Everyone knew each other, and the town often felt like more of a large family than a simple town. Because of this connection, the town was never the same after the death of Jackson Overland. Jackson, better known as Jack, looked out for his mother and sister after the death of his father as a boy. He helped around the village, and had always been the one who encouraged everyone, and who had been there for every single child who lived in Burgess. His death was a harsh blow to the small community, but most especially to his family.

Overland POV

Emma Overland, a young girl of ten, walked beside her mother, Theresa, as they entered the village. They lived just outside the town, closer to the forest, since their family tended the flocks of sheep. It had been a year years since the death of Emma's older brother, Jackson, and the village had never been the same. His death had taken its toll on, not just his mother and sister, but the entire village.

"This is the type of morning Jack would have loved." Theresa commented as she held her ten-year-old daughter's hand. The morning was cold, with a covering of frost all over the grass and houses. The pale grey clouds above the village hinted at snow, as did the fresh scent that blew through the village on the wind. Emma leaned against her mother as the wind seemed to caress her cheek and her hair blew out of her eyes.

"He would have never come with us, Ma. You know how much he hated mornings." Emma replied, and Theresa smiled sadly, running a hand through her daughter's unruly hair.

"Good morning, Mrs. Overland. Good morning, Emma." James Bennet said, approaching the duo with a small smile. James had been Jack's best friend, and he had been looking out for the Overlands after his friend died. Emma looked at him, returning his smile with a rare one of her own. She stopped to speak with him while her mother walked ahead to the shop. The few women standing outside the shop looked up at Theresa walked up to them, welcoming her as one of them hugged her tightly. Visitors passing through may have just thought the village was always close-knit, but no one would ever know how close the village was after Jack's death.

"How are you, James?" Emma asked, and James shrugged, his hands in his pockets.

"I've been better." he replied, and Emma nodded in agreement. "How are you and your mother?"

"We're holding up. Losing Jack only a few years after Pa has taken it's toll on Ma." Emma said, and James placed a hand on her shoulder comfortingly.

"You'll get through it. We all will." he said encouragingly. Emma gave him another rare smile, touching his hand thankfully.

"Thank you, James." she told him softly. As she walked towards her mother to help her gather the items they needed, a bright light engulfed the entire village, and they all disappeared.

Burgess, Pennsylvania: 2012

"A tooth!" Jamie Bennet yelled, bursting into his home after saying goodbye to his friends. At his shout, Mrs. Bennet came into the living room with an amused smile on her face.

"How did that happen?" she asked, and Jamie grinned broadly, proudly showing off the gap in his mouth.

"I was sledding down the road, and I crashed into the statue of the Burgess founder, and I got hit by a sofa!" he replied excitedly. Mrs Bennet looked at him, raising an eyebrow.

"That's quite the story." she said, shaking her head fondly at his wild story. Jamie ran past his mother, bolting up the stairs to his bedroom, where he placed the tooth on his nightstand. He then went into his younger sister's bedroom, where she sat playing with her stuffed animals.

"Hiya, Soph!" Jamie said, and his four-year-old sister giggled in delight as he knelt down to tickle her. The two siblings went to play with Jamie's toys in his bedroom as a bright light engulfed the two, along with Jamie's friends, making them disappear.

Burgess, Pennsylvania (Jack Frost POV)

On the rooftop of the Bennet home, Jack Frost was pacing, his staff on his shoulders as he kicked his feet in annoyance.

"They still can't see me." he ranted, his voice sad. He sat down on the roof, holding his staff tightly. He then looked up at the sky, where he could see the faint outline of the moon. "Can't you at least tell me what I'm doing wrong?" There was no response to his question, making Jack sigh in annoyance. He flipped his hood over his head, hiding his face as he stood, beginning to walk across telephone poles, his steps creating small patterns of ice on the wires. As the winter spirit walked, a bright light engulfed him, and he disappeared.

North Pole: 2012

The four Guardians of Childhood looked at the crystal before them with shock.

"Jack Frost!" North said, surprised at Manny's choice, but not disappointed. The other three Guardians also had different looks on their faces. Bunny had a look of intense annoyance on his furry face, his arms crossed. Tooth was looking at the image of Jack dreamily, floating above the ground with her fairies. Sandy had a happy smile on his face, excited for the frost child that he knew fondly.

"Jack Frost is not a Guardian." Bunny protested, and North rolled his eyes. Tooth shook herself from her daze, blushing beneath her feathers.

"As long as he, you know, protects the children." she said, slight embarrassment in her voice. Sandy smiled in amusement at his friends. Before their conversation could continue, a bright light engulfed the four Guardians, and they disappeared.

I hope you all enjoyed the rewrite! I know it was short, but this is just the set up!

If you're curious as to where I got the date for the past Burgess, I based it off the release date of the movie, which was 2012, and since Jack was about 314 at the time of the movie, and died when he was 14, I took that date, which ended up being 1712!

Please review and let me know what you all thought!

I'm giving you all a warning now- I'm not sure how consistent my updates will be. I'll be rewriting the current chapters I have up, but because of school and such, I'm not too sure if my updates will be quick. I'm REALLY hoping to get a lot done during my spring break, which is in a week, so we shall see.

Anyway, I will see you soon, Guardians!

Love,

Enchantress
