Title: Ever, Shinigami
Summary: A poem from Duo's POV.
I walk,
Down deserted streets,
The deteriorating buildings, my only company.
They rise up,
Out of the darkness.
On either side, they stand tall.
Testaments of their former glory.
I have trudged darker paths than these.
Pausing,
I hear a rustle,
Faint, but ever drawing nearer.
Shadows shift,
Taking shape.
The nightmare has come.
And I am afraid.
It is Death,
Come to collect on a promise,
Made long ago.
Come to take what I have taken from so many others,
As payment,
On a debt long forgotten.
There are no regrets.
He stands before me,
All shrouded in black,
And holding out a grim hand,
Meant for me to take.
In the other,
He wields a scythe,
Reminiscent of days gone by.
The shadow approaches.
I know that I should run,
But something calls me back.
And all I can do is stare.
He steps into the light,
My breath catches in my throat.
There is silence,
As if time itself has stopped to relish in the moment.
Then it is over,
And I give him a nod and a smile as I pass,
Continuing down the lonely road I have chosen for myself.
And when I was away,
I could laugh.
Letting my laughter echo into the vast and empty night,
And who wouldn't,
Had they found,
That the creature so feared by men,
That which walks in the shadowy corners of your dreams,
Was only a reflection of themselves?
Ever,
Shinigami.
