Not Doing This For Him
Tonks' POV:
I walked clumsily up the steps of Grimmauld Palace. I inevitably tripped and sighed frustrated. I had a serious clumsiness problem. We were going to Diagon Alley today to see what was going on. I went into the small bedroom and looked into the mirror. I pulled on a ratty pair of jeans, an old Weird Sisters shirt, and my favorite deep purple cloak. I brightened my bubblegum hair a little more and grew a couple inches. I made my hair long and curly. I considered it. I had never tried long, curly, bright pink hair before. It looked nice. I made sure my reflection was perfect, tweaking my appearance here and there.
I heard a knock at the door and called out, "Come in!" Molly came in and saw me scrutinizing my appearance. She smiled at me and said, "They're leaving in five minutes. They wanted me to tell you." She exited and closed the door, only to open it and pop her head back in for a moment. "He likes you just the way you are, dear," she advised me softly, looking at me knowingly. I nodded numbly. She closed the door gently.
I flopped down on my bed and told myself sternly that I wasn't worrying about my appearance for him. I scolded myself silently for acting like a teenage girl, bit it couldn't be helped. I used to think the girls at Hogwarts that went around all googley-eyed for men were ridiculous, especially those who shed tears over them. But now I was one of them. How many times had I sobbed into Molly Weasley's shoulder because of him? Too many. But I wouldn't turn into a woman who spent hours on her looks for men. No, Nyphadora Tonks would not do that. I wasn't doing this for him, I was doing it for myself.
With a sudden air of confidence, I walked to the creaky old steps to go down and get on with today. I descended the steps and got down the first five without and trouble. But of course, I tripped over my own feet and stumbled forward… into him. Blushing almost as fiercely as the time I caught Ron Weasley coming out of the shower in just a towel I tried to right myself only to tangle myself up even more. "Sorry," I apologized, looking down.
"I was just coming up to make sure you were ok. Good thing I did," he chuckled. I nodded and looked up at him.
"I never can seem to make it down these steps, they're cursed, I swear," I joked, hoping it didn't sound too forced.
"Yes I'm sure they are. Now, let's get you downstairs safely so that we can go to Diagon Alley. Shall we?" he extended an arm and I took it gratefully.
It was then, when my fingers touched his, that I realized that, yes, I, Nymphadora Tonks, the ultimate tomboy, was doing this all for Remus Lupin.
