Do I really need to say that these characters are not mine, or is that a
given at this point in the game?
Hope
Subaru looked out over Tokyo. He didn't really want to be the new Sakurazukamori, but destiny, like Seishiro-san, loved to toy with him. He looked out to the bridge where fate took its place, and then down to the back of his hands.
"Why must fate be so cruel?" He found himself saying out loud.
"Fate has a way of working itself out." Came a voice from behind.
Subaru turned to see who the voice belonged to, upon seeing, he turned back around, unable to meet the other's eyes.
"What are you doing here Kamui? It's dangerous for you to be around me." The newly appointed assassin told him.
"I've come to bring hope to the one who brought it to me." Kamui approached Subaru at the edge of the roof, he picked up some sakura petals, and studied them closely. "Destiny is a funny thing. It can tear friendships apart, and even kill people, as we have seen. But no matter what it can throw at us…we live on, either in physical form or in memory." Kamui let the sakura petals fly away in the wind.
"Kamui, what is it you've come for?" Subaru said rather coolly.
"You're still a Sumeragi. I have hope that you'll find a way out of being the Sakurazukamori." Kamui looked at Subaru anxiously
"Of course there's a way out. The same way Seishiro-san got out. The one who cares for me the most will kill me and then take my place."
"But don't you hope for-"
"No I don't! Hope is when the weak-minded people try to convince themselves and those around them that they can change what has been destined. Kamui," Subaru took him by the shoulders and looked into his eyes with a fierceness that Kamui had never seen in his friend. "This is the way it is. This is the way it needs to be." He looked back over the city.
"I don't accept that." Kamui tried one last time.
"Then I don't know what else to tell you." Subaru closed his eyes. "I strongly suggest that you leave here before my Sakura Tree craves your blood."
"If that's the way you feel, Sumeragi-san, I won't bother you anymore."
Subaru opened his eyes and thought once more, as if in a vain attempt to convince himself, This is the way it has to be*.
