If he were to make a bulleted list comparison, Sauske knew that he and Naruto had very little that would fall in the 'both' column. They had different tastes in food, style and hobbies. Not that this was the first time in the nearly seven years that they had been together that he'd realized it.
Because growing up they'd always been fighting about everything.
In freshmen year when Naruto went to his first year at band camp and they had found out that Sauske was nearly tone deaf. And then shortly after that they'd found out Naruto didn't know how to throw a football. Sauske couldn't keep a beat, but Naruto could never remember the positions on a football team.
Or in sophomore year, when Sauske made the Dean's list all four quarters, and Naruto got straight C's. When they had started dating, over winter break that year though, they'd stolen each other from red heads- but even then, Naruto had been dating a guy.
Junior year had Naruto in the art club and on the student council's prom committee. Sauske played football and went stag to all the dances. The blond idiot was crowned prom king with Sauske's ex as his queen.
Senior year Naruto was Field Commander of the Marching Band that went to state, on the student council and still wasting an afternoon a week in the art room. Senior Year Sauske's parents died in a car crash, he quit football and got a part-time job.
They graduated in completely different ends of the GPA scale- because even while taking care of the house, with the help from his older, premed, brother, Sauske graduated valedictorian, and Naruto barely graduated.
In college they did go to the same school and shared the same dorm room, but Naruto was a music major and Sauske got in on a football scholarship. They would even fight about how or when to have sex most of the time. Sauske still tried too hard and Naruto probably should have tried harder.
He'd known all along they were just really different.
Sauske had a jerk older brother, and Naruto had grown up alone. Sauske had lost his parents, Naruto had gained his adoptive older brother/father figure, Iruka. Sauske had a cat when he was little; Iruka's boyfriend has too many dogs.
But on that Saturday night, as they sat across from each other at the pizza place all their mish-mashed friends came too, Sauske realized one 'both' they shared was that they were both happy.
And as they walked back to the dorm that night, Sauske realized that Naruto may be his opposite in everything, true; but he figured that was probably why they worked so well.
"It's that moment in life when you finally have to admit to yourself not everything is perfect, that makes everything suddenly seem better all by itself."
I've always been in love with the idea that Sauske and Naruto who are purposely written as complete opposites, could fall in love. The Magnet Theroy.. Hmm.
Lately, I haven't been able to focus, so sorry all my works have been non-existent for a while. Hopefully, I can try to focus on them again soon.
