Tomorrow. 24 hours until Wallabee Beatles would forget everything about the kids next door. Numbuh 5 and 2 had already been decommissioned the month before. Now it was his turn to turn 13 years old and lose his childhood to become a "cruddy teenager." But Wally had promised that he would always be a kid at heart, even if he was 100 years old. But what good was that once he couldn't even remember the boy who spoke those words to him?
Numbuh 4 had remembered when Abby had left them. Numbuh 3 had given her one of her cruddy rainbow dorkies as a goodbye gift. At first, Wally thought a farewell gift was stupid. Numbuh 5 wouldn't remember the significance of the doll. She wouldn't remember the lovable, raven haired girl who took the most pride in her extensive rainbow monkey collection. It was a true sacrifice that Numbuh 3 took to show Abby how much she cared.
Wally remembered Hoagie, too. Numbuh 3 had given him a new pair of aviator goggles, engraved with the phrase, "We are kids next door." Numbuh 2 had been so grateful, so happy on a day of darkness.
Wally couldn't help but remember Kuki Sanban's kindness. He couldn't help but remember her beautiful smile, and her oversized green sweater she always wore. He remembered the times she hugged him, and how it seemed as though thousands of butterflies might burst from his chest whenever he saw her. He remembered how much he loved her, and how much he still does. After Numbuh 4 was decommissioned tomorrow, the girl of Wally's dreams would be all alone in a treehouse filled with bittersweet memories of the times sector V spent together.
So Numbuh 4 wanted to give Kuki a gift of his own. He remembered how at Christmas time every year, Kuki would buy thoughtful gifts for everyone, and she would get nothing in return. She always thought of others before herself. And even though sometimes she could be a little dense, she was the most caring person Wally had ever met.
He wanted a gift that would keep her company in her coming times of loneliness, and he knew that even though the stupid things could be irritating, rainbow monkeys filled the void of any sadness or suffering. But he didn't want it to just be any old rainbow monkey. He wanted it to be special. So on his last day of being a kids next door operative, Wally was out buying a rainbow monkey for the girl he loved more than anything.
Wally had finally chosen a simple orange rainbow monkey to remind Numbuh 3 of his iconic orange sweater he always wore. But Kuki had plenty of orange rainbow monkeys, so what was the point of getting her yet another one? As Wally sat stuffing the monkey, a thought came to mind. Before he stitched the ends together, Wally made a promise on a little green heart. Wally promised he wouldn't forget the times they had spent together, and he promised to always love her, even if he didn't remember who she was. And his promise was sealed inside the stuffing of his gift to her.
