This is the ninth of a series of fanfics I plan to do where I get the quote of the day off of a list and then write whatever it makes me think of. I hope this turns out as good as I want it to.

Character(s) or Pairings: Spain, Chibi Romano

Quote: "Children need love, especially when they do not deserve it." By Harold S. Hulbert

---

Young Romano was fuming as he hurried into the bedroom and slammed the door.

Nothing was going right for him today.

He had accidently slept in too long; he had stubbed his toe when waking Spain up that morning; his breakfast had been burnt; he had not gotten to take a bath because he had been running late; his favorite shirt had a stain that had not come out in the laundry; and, to top it all off, he had been confused for his stupid little brother when he had been at the market with his caretaker before lunch time.

So when Spain had dropped the tomatoes that Romano had lovingly picked out to the ground and tried to laugh it off, he really should have expected the child to explode at him like he had.

Well, that was not exactly fair, the boy knew. After all, Antonio had no way of knowing everything that had gone wrong earlier that day. He had not even been there during most of it. And he was sure that the green-eyed nation had not meant to waste money or food like that. He loved tomatoes, too, after all.

Lovino groaned, knowing that he had struck out at the man unfairly.

Why did things like that always have to happen to him? He just could not keep his mouth shut when he was upset. He had tried working on it before but it had been no use. Apparently, he was just destined to act on his worst impulses and have to suffer the guilt afterwards.

It just was not fair.

The worst part was that Spain always seemed to forgive him.

It was not that the child did not want forgiveness. In fact, that was exactly what he searched for. He just did not know why that bastard gave it away so freely. After all, when someone wronged him, he usually wanted them to beg for his pardon. How could the adult just accept that he was sorry for his actions so easily? Half the time, he did not even tell him that he was. Antonio just knew.

It really got on his nerves.

What had he ever done to deserve that kind of treatment? His housemate was the one who was always saying that he had gotten the defective part of Italy. Didn't he realize how utterly unspectacular Romano was? Didn't he know that he did not deserve the forgiveness and kindness that he was given so often in return for his harsh remarks and actions?

Before he knew it, Lovino was crying into his pillow.

After a while, Spain finally made his way to the room the child had run into. He opened the door and went over to the bed, gently patting the boy's back to let him know that he there and to try and provide some sort of comfort. He did not really know what was wrong but he knew that he wanted to help him.

"Stop being so nice, you bastard," the child said, sitting up and wiping his eyes. "I was mean to you. I didn't do anything to deserve it."

"Lovi," Antonio started, pulling him into his lap and embrace. "No one is loved because they deserve it. You're loved because you're you."

Lovino hit the adult's chest softly and then cuddled into his embrace.
