A/N – This is my first House-related fic ever.

Summary - Dr. Chase actually got to keep his promise.

Disclaimer - I don't own anything.

The Promise

It was good thing that Dr. House was working in the team.

Because Dr. Chase couldn't deal with death.

Too many people in his life had been buries under ground, and too many of them had been too close to him.

That's why he didn't trust people anymore.

In the age of fourteen Chase and his cousin had been in a car accident. Chase got out with just a broken wrist, the cousin died couple of hours later.

Every now and then Chase hoped, that the drunken driver would had hit his side of the car.

But no such luck. He had to live with the over-whelming grief for the rest of his life.

''You know I'm a doctor, right?'' Jack asked as they were heading back from the airport.

Chase nodded, wondering were this was heading.

''I had my first real test today, in a real situation. The guy didn't have a pulse and my teacher was tellind me to do something. But I was frozen in place. I had been in med school for so many years and yet I couldn't do a damn thing.''

Chase looked at his cousin, who was lost in his thoughts.

''The patient died. He was dead just because I couldn't do a damn thing. And when I finally thought I could, he was already gone.''

Jack seemed to be close to tears and he was tightening his hold of the steering wheel. He was quiet for a while, before he spoke again.

''Could you promise me something, Robert?''

''Sure,'' he said.

''Promise me that you'll do better than me. If you have a chance to save someone's life, then you'll do it.''

Chase nodded.

Just then there was a loud crash.

After that Chase always kept his promise. Even while being with a dieing patient he was able to keep himself lucid and do what he was once told to do.

Just save the patient's life.

Because that's what Jack would have wanted to do.

Because that's why Chase went to med school in the first place.

Because he was Robert Chase and he always kept his promises.

He hated to me around his patients, who were having their last moments on Earth. He was scared to listen to them, to hear their last words.

He admired Dr. House for not visiting his patients. Just because he himself cared about them. It must've felt good to just save someone's life and never see them personally.

In the past if someone died in Chase's care he just went home and thought about everything that he could have done differently.

But because of Greg House in the hospital he was saved from a lot of thinking.

Because nobody died under Greg's diagnosis.

And because of that, Chase actually got to keep his promise.
