"There she is brother," Hikaru sighed.
"Here we go again," Kaoru agreed.
They both headed down to the court yard where a pretty young girl was waiting, nervously toying with the edge of her skirt.
"Hey there, I hope you weren't waiting long," said Kaoru.
"Oh, no its alright. Hello Kaoru."
"Actually I'm Hikaru. You must have gotten our desks confused when you put this note in it."
"Oh..." the girl said in surprise, her cheeks coloring in embarrassment.
"Although, I must say, I thought your letter was very nice... And the truth is, I wish it was for me. You see, I've always liked you. So maybe, do you think you could like me too?"
The girl was silent for a long time as Kaoru waited for the routine answer.
"I'm so sorry Hikaru... but I couldn't. I like Kaoru too much, and it just wouldn't be the same." She hid her face, hoping that who she thought was Hikaru wouldn't take the rejection too badly.
Instead, he was dumb founded. He stared at the girl in amazement. She was the first out of many to refuse the offer. She looked up and noticed him staring at her.
"Oh, Im so sorry Hikaru, I just, I mean, oh I couldn't," she stuttered, thinking he was angry at being turned down. "I'm sorry," she whispered and with that, she turned and ran.
Hikaru came out from behind the hedges and joined his brother. "She really liked you Kaoru," he said.
"Yeah," agreed Kaoru quietly.
"Maybe people aren't all bad," There was a long pause. "I think you should go after her. She's different from the others."
Kaoru looked at his brother in surprise. "But its always been just you and me. And if I go out with someone else, well, what would happen to us?"
"I don't know what will happen Kaoru, but I know one thing. We will always be brothers, no matter what. We'll always be close, and not let anyone come between us, even if we see other people."
Kaoru looked at Hikaru and smiled. "Thanks Hikaru"
He nodded in response, and looked off to where the girl had run off to. "Go get her."
Kaoru started off in the direction she had run in and turned back to Hikaru. He smiled one last time, and then ran.
Things would be different now, mused Hikaru. His brother would be happy with her, and who was he to stop his brother from being happy.
"I'll find someone too, someday." he muttered to himself, and with hands in his pockets, slouched off to his next class.
~*Years Later*~
Hikaru knew she was different. The only one who could ever seem to tell them apart. She was funny, smart, and horridly common, which was a refreshing change. He knew his brother liked her too. Haruhi Fujioka.
She was fun to toy with, and seeing her irritated was hilarious.
Hikaru knew that there was something different about the way he acted with her as opposed to other people. He was more emotional, more impulsive. Sometimes, he saw Kaoru looking at him strangely, like he was deep in thought. Though, when Hikaru pressed him about it, he just brushed him off.
Finally, after an argument over the subject Kaoru just took a deep breath and said, "She's different. We act different around her, especially you. She's to special to be lost. Tell her how you feel. Go get her."
Hikaru suddenly flashed back to the day when he had told his brother the exact same thing. They shared a grin and then took off, each slinging an arm around around Haruhi and ignoring Tamaki's annoyed expression.
