Airwing
Chapter 1
The large building towered over any challenger in sight. The small shed on the northeast side looked so small in comparison, but the resident inside the shed, were much smaller than the environment they occupied. In a small crevice, through the roof of the shed, there was a small bat colony, and their temporary roost nested some fifty to sixty Blackwings. The tiny colony was constantly on the move, but once they reached the city… they would branch out and try to save what was left of their dying breed. A large male stood atop an upturned crate and picked his teeth with his long claw casually. Once he had worked a small beetle leg from his canines he flicked it from his muzzle and looked around, waiting for his mate to call him back to their individual roost. The silence was deafening! He wanted to know if his mate and their newborn were going to make it out alive. It didn't take long before he heard a loud shriek break from the inside of the small crevice. He took to the air, moving his wings in swift upstrokes. That voice was his mates' voice! While the other males were out hunting, the females were supposed to stay back at the main roost, and watch the newborns. But Murk knew Eclipse' voice... It was her… it had to be! He flew hard and pulled his wings in tight to his torso, his small chest aching with the need to see if his mate was really alright. Eclipse, was much too young to have a child… but he couldn't help it. From the moment the duo met, it was an instant love story, though they were trying to hide from the whitecoats. The two were trapped in different traps, but in the same region, she was a Blackwing, while he was too, though regretfully… he was only half-breed. He landed down roughly on the wood and scuttled to the hole where they roosted he clambered inside and peered in, there was his mate, unmoving a small female pup trying to suckle her for milk. He looked utterly heartbroken when his mate didn't move, she just… hung there her small black form an ubiquitous shape against the soft lacquered wood of the shed he cast a weary burst of sound in their direction, she wasn't moving… at all. He made a small noise and hurried over to her side. He brushed his muzzle against her nose and he felt a cold chill run down his spine, making his fur stand on end. He shivered anxiously and closed his eyes and tried not to stare into hers. He looked to the squirming pup on her abdomen, it's frail claws gripping into the cold, flesh of her birthmother. He leaned in slightly to like her snout lightly and stare down at the naked thing. He reached over and closed his wings around the two, pressing his chest close to the pup, trying to get her to cling onto his own breast, but she wouldn't let go, she just simpered and shook. He sighed and leaned his head into his mates and sighed weakly. He'd have to find someone who could supply the newborn with milk, until she was big enough to hunt for herself. He peered out a small termite hole in the wall and stared out at the world, he could hear faint signs of the Dawn Chorus. He looked to the newborn, clutching onto her mother's chest and looked away quickly,
"Dawn" he said quietly and the little newborn went quiet and eventually started to squirm in between the two bats, and Murk only smiled and leaned his head down to lick some of the afterbirth off his daughters head.
"Dawn it is then…"
