AN: I read Trust No One yesterday, and got inspired. Enjoy.
Smile
"You've got a bunch of different smiles, and the one you tried using isn't a single one of them at all. That smile doesn't suit you." "Then please tell me, what are my smiles?"
by Airene Archerway
That isn't her smile.
This thought runs through his head after knocking on the door and having it answered with a weak and pained "come in". He walked inside, and saw her just sitting there, flipping through pages of a book absentmindedly. Then she looked up and smiled at him, but he knows that the smile she's wearing on her face isn't her smile. It's a fake one. And it's the exact reason why he decided to go and talk to her.
It's sad. He hates seeing her so broken and hopeless. He has to make her smile again, because as long as she's not smiling, then he won't either. Her smile makes him happy, and it feels so unusual watching her with a fake one on her face. It's not the same smile, and he hates that. If he could put a smile on her face, a real smile, then he would feel great. Making her smile feels wonderful.
"Hi." she says with the fake smile remaining plastered on her face, looking up from her book and setting it down on the table next to her chair. "Do you need anything?"
"I need you to smile." he says abruptly, getting straight to the point. Her 'smile' fades and she gives him a confused look. "That smile you were wearing? It's fake." he counters, "You've got a bunch of different smiles, and the one you tried using isn't a single one of them at all. That smile doesn't suit you."
"Then please tell me, what are my smiles?" she asks, making him take a deep breath and begin.
"Like I said, you have a lot. You have one that you use whenever we're against all odds, but you smile anyway and give us a small pep talk. There's the one you use when you talk to Dan, something like 'my brother is an idiot but I love him anyway'. Whenever you get excited about something nerdy that I don't necessarily understand, you get all excited and you look like a Chesire cat with your grin. There's the one you wear whenever you're really thankful for something, and the one that's on your face whenever you talk to Tolliver, though it's becoming more of a sigh already." he adds the last part with a grin of his own, "You've got a lot more, so I won't bother naming everything else, really, or else it would take me forever."
She laughs weakly, and finally smiles. "Thanks, I needed that." she says, "Why do you want to make me smile? Why do you care so much if I'm smiling or not?" she asks.
"Whenever I make you smile, you've got a specific one. Like it's reserved just for me, and it makes me feel special or something cheesy like that." he says, "And it makes me happy when I see it. It feels great to make you smile, so great that it makes me smile too. And when you're not smiling, then I'm not smiling either." He remains silent for a while up until finally speaking up again. "Promise me two things, Amy. One, never stop smiling." she nods in agreement then waits for him to say his second request. "And two, never give anyone else your Jake Rosenbloom smile. That's for me and me only."
He sees her roll her eyes (still smiling) and she doesn't reply to his favor while he's still there. But, when he starts to walk out of the door he can hear the faintest whisper of "fine" escape her lips.
