Notes: I found this in one of my old notebooks when I was cleaning, so I decided to post it. Anyway, this is a one-shot, future Rory/Jess. This is dedicated to all of the Lits, the old and the new.
And of course, to the E, who I disappointed by not participating in the Fic-A-Thon. ;) Consider this to be my apology.
Anywho, sorry if it sucks. I have no idea when I wrote this.
The Unspoken
They've been together for a long time now. And like all couples, they've had their share of problems. Lies have surfaced, questions of infidelity asked, and the recurring dilemma surrounding what their relationship was exactly. These insecurities (on his part, on her part) surface occasionally, but they're always put to rest because of the unspoken understanding between them.
He doesn't really know. She doesn't either.
They are day and night, both trying to catch one another, but never being able to.
He wonders why she stays.
Sometimes he questions his reasons as well.
Why?
It is the honest question that they could never answer.
Why?
It's simple enough, right?
Of course not. Nothing has ever been simple when it came to the question of "them".
He asks her one day, "Why do you stay?"
She looks at him, contemplative, and replies, "You know why."
That's the funny thing, though. He doesn't. He doesn't know why she expects him to know; she's never really told him.
"Do you love me?" she asks him one day.
He couldn't reply and she never asks again.
So why then? There are explanations for everything.
Why do you stay?
You know why.
No, I don't.
Yes, yes you do.
No, I really don't. Tell me.
Because.
Because why?
Because it doesn't get any better than this.
"Are you sure about that?" he asks.
Yes.
Okay.
So, why do you stay?
Because.
Because why?
"Because I love you," he replies with a tone of finality.
They've been together a long time, and in that period of time, they've come to a sort of silent agreement. They don't need to say everything out loud.
For them, it's an unspoken knowledge. He loves her, she loves him, and sometimes it's as simple as that.
Sometimes words aren't necessary.
