Hi everyone, this is my first band of brothers fanfiction, it's just a short drabble really. It's set during episode 9. The short conversation between Luz and Webster really struck something in me. Last summer I visited Auschwitz. It was a beautiful summer day, and somehow I found it hard to grasp what had happened here. I think most of us can't, not really. In one of the buildings, they kept behind glass things the Nazis stole from their victims. One of the rooms was filled with little baby shoes. It's an image that will haunt me for the rest of my life.
On a slightly brighter note, I'm a member of an initiative called Live and Remember. The goal is to keep the memories about the war heroes who died in World War II alive by creating a fanpage on facebook. I created a page for Alex Penkala, God rest his soul, and it would mean a great deal to me if you would all become fans. This is the link to the page: www. facebook .com/#!/pages/Live-and-Remember-Alex-M-Penkala-Jr/10150093810515162?ref=ts (the computer won't let me post the link in one piece)
Oh, and someone also made a page for Skip Muck and Lieutenant Meehan.
Now, the story:
'Jesus, Web. Can you believe this place?'
When the question came, private Webster wasn't sure what to think. Could he believe this? Could anyone, really?
Could anyone grasp the sheer misery, the injustice, the evil of it all. The sight of half-burned bodies and walking skeletons. The smell of hunger and decay. The smoke of burning flesh.
The sheer thought that human beings were capable of committing such a heinous crime. The size of the whole thing.
It was as if the whole world had slipped into madness, and morals, humanity and goodness didn't matter anymore.
Could he believe this?
'No.'
