Prologue
As I lay in my makeshift den, having just woken up from a fitful sleep, I start to think back to the day my parents died while I was still a pup.
"Son, if you want to become a good hunter, like me, you need to learn to focus on the scents around you," said my father, as my mom watched from the mouth of the cave. "Now son, what can you smell?" As I focused, I started to smell the air. "Rabbit, deer, and some other strange scents," I said, looking at my father.
He sniffed the air, and that's when he looked at mother with a worried look on his face. "Spirit, go with your mother and hide in the back of the cave!" I had no time to ask what was happening, as mother grabbed me by the scruff and carried me to the back of the cave.
Mother wrapped around me and tried her best to calm me down, as growls, barks, and snarling filled the air. A couple seconds later, a shadow appeared at the entrance, and mom chased it away. A few more barks and growls filled the air, followed by a whine, then everything was silent.
I wandered out of the cave and saw two black bears laying on the ground unmoving. I walked over to where mom and dad were laying and tried to wake them up.
"Mama, Papa, why won't you wake up?"
