Dominic: Wow, so you must be Ferdinand Magellan?
Ferdinand: Yes that is me.
Dominic: So when and where were you born?
Ferdinand: I was born in Portugal, in 1480.
Dominic: What made you want to be a sailor?
Ferdinand: Well I wanted to be a sailor since was a boy but my father made me become a page boy.
Dominic: When did you get to sail for the first time?
Ferdinand: I was going to India to install some guy as the Portuguese viceroy but something went wrong and we got into a fight.
Dominic: Ouch, what happened next?
Ferdinand: When I got home, the queen was accusing me of illegal trading with Moors and I fell out of favor with Portugal.
Dominic: What did you do about it?
Ferdinand: I asked Spain, our rivals, for work.
Dominic: Isn't that wrong?
Ferdinand: If my country fired me what's going to stop me from going there. The Spanish gave me five ships to find the Spice Islands; The San Antonio, the Santiago, the Victoria, the Concepcion, and the Trinidad.
Dominic: What happened next?
Ferdinand: At first the voyage was going smooth, then we started to have some bad weather and some ship captains mutinied.
Dominic: What did you do to the mutineers?
Ferdinand: I gave punishments based on their involvement, I spared one, marooned two, killed one, and I hung and quartered one.
Dominic: Isn't that last one a little extreme?
Ferdinand: They were trying to kill me and steal my ships, I don't think so.
Dominic: Ok…so what happened after that?
Ferdinand: Soon after that the Santiago was wrecked by a storm. Later we found a strait that took us right through South America. I named it after myself and continued to the other side. Unfortunately, the captain of the San Antonio deserted us and took the ship.
Dominic: What happened when you left the strait?
Ferdinand: I found some very calm waters and I called the place Mar Pacifico, or the Pacific Ocean. It was very big; we didn't see land for quite a while.
Dominic: Then what?
Ferdinand: After a long time, we finally found a place called Guam. For some reason, a bunch of natives stole the Trinidad's small boats.
Dominic: So what did the people think of you?
Ferdinand: They greatly accepted me, their leaders even converted to Christianity.
Dominic: What did they do with you?
Ferdinand: They are sending me to battle some rivals at Mactan, which reminds me, I have to go now.
Dominic: Well then, I thank you for your time.
Ferdinand: No problem.
"Ferdinand Magellan died at the battle of Mactan in April 27th, 1521. Of the 5 ships and 230 men he set out with, only the Victoria and 18 men made it back to Spain.
