Disclaimer:I do not own anything. I'm just lending Rob Thomas' amazing universe for a short love story.
A/N: I was sitting, writing my other fic and this suddenly wanted out. It came out of nowhere. I'm thinking this takes place a year or two after season 3. Hope you enjoy it. It's just a short story. I'm still writing my hands off on Piece by Piece.
The choice he made would haunt him forever
He stood there watching her without her noticing. He had no idea how long he had been standing there, but he felt like he could stand there forever. Watching her every move, every little change in her face.
She was laughing; he loved it when she laughed. He could hear her laugh in his mind and he almost started to laugh himself, where he stood, far away from her.
She lifted her hand and removed a wisp of her hair that the warm summer breeze had blown in her face. Her long, blonde hair. He could still feel the wonderful smell, and he remembered all those times he had smelled it, standing close to her.
He wondered how he ended up here. So far away for the only woman he really loved, the only woman that meant the world to him.
He wanted to run down, to touch her, smell her, kiss her, but he knew it was impossible. He had made his choice. He walked away from her once, and he could never go back. Never be close to her again.
The choice he made seemed right at the time, maybe it still did. But at times like this, when he saw her, and couldn't contact her it ached in him, more than he could ever explain.
Now she turns around down there, she faces the man she loves. The man she has chosen to live her life with. He can see the love sparkle in her eyes when she looks at the other man. She can see the genuine smile she gives him before they lean in for a passionate kiss. He can still feel her lips against his. But he will never feel them for real again.
He made his choice and now she had made hers. He knew that she never really loved him the way he loves her, they way she loves this other man. The passion, the undying desire, they never had that. Only in his heart were they the perfect match.
He looks down at his daughter playing in the sand beneath him and he smiles. Even though he regrets leaving Veronica, he couldn't regret choosing Lilly.
Duncan takes his daughter in his arms, takes one last look at Veronica and Logan. He smiles and thinks; I want her to be with me, but those two… they are truly meant to be.
