I never thought I'd write ANYTHING for the Sonic fandom, seeing as I'm not as much as a fan anymore. Sure, I used to love it when I was a kid, but to be honest I'm stuck in 2001 playing SA2 Battle and the very old Sonic games. But this idea has been bothering me for about a week now.
This feeling, it was rare for him. It felt like pressure was swelling up in his chest, ready to burst and spill out its contents. He wasn't sure if it was a positive or negative feeling, maybe it was neutral? It confused him greatly and led to countless nights of staring at the stars, thinking over and over again. Why, just why was he feeling like this? What was happening to him?
"Shadow, is something wrong?"
Shadow couldn't help but smile when he heard a soft voice and feel the presence of a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and saw the smiling face of his friend, although there was concern in those large blue eyes. Closing his own he shook his head and stared back out to the night sky. The way the stars moved like they were drifting through water reminded Shadow of the test tubes scattered about in the Space Colony ARK.
"It's nothing, I'm fine," Shadow waved his gloved hand and looked down onto the Earth. Everything seemed peaceful and carefree, but he thought otherwise. He wanted to believe the stories Maria told him about, and yet he couldn't.
Shadow wanted to go down to Earth, he really did. He wanted to get out of the ARK, out of the loneliness, out of his boring life. He wanted to know what rain felt like, how the temperature changed for the seasons. He wanted to run through fields and walk through cities. Basically, Shadow wanted to do everything that Maria told him about. Just the two of them.
"I know there's something wrong, please tell me," Maria kneeled and turned Shadow to face her. She gave a small frown when he refused to look at her, his red eyes fixed onto the stars. "Is it about Earth again?"
"Maria, I've been keeping something from you." He gave a sigh and finally looked at her. She gave him a nod to urge him to tell her what was on his mind.
"I don't think Earth is really like you said it is," Maria wanted to say something but before she could he continued. "I think it's filled with cruel human beings that just want to hurt other humans. I…I've been having this dream, the two of us were running away from soldiers…" He paused and looked in another direction, anywhere but those ocean blue eyes.
"They were chasing us, we kept running and running but they managed to catch up to us. And then one shot at you, and you got hit. You sent me to earth and the experience was horrible." Shadow's eyes drifted back to Maria's face and was shocked to see that she was smiling. He didn't know what to say when she lifted her hand and started to pet his head. When she started to scratch behind his ears he started to purr. It felt comforting and reassuring.
"Well you know Shadow, I've been keeping something from you too," The smile was still on her face, but her eyes were filled with sadness. Maria gave one last scratch to his ear before leaning down to whisper in it.
"I'm not real."
