It was a moment of absolute uncertainty.
Castiel made his way through heaven to give his report to his commanding officer. Moments before he had confided to Dean Winchester that he had doubts, questions. His Father, he knew, was all-knowing—there was nothing that could be hidden from Him—and now, knowing this, he had to return to give his account of recent events.
He tried not to fidget as he spoke, giving his report just as he had done hundreds of thousands of times before. His superior nodded as appropriate, asking for further details as necessary. Once he was finished, he had to mentally remind himself not to shift his weight from one foot to the other as he had so often seen Sam Winchester do.
His fellow angel penned something down, before looking up at him. "Castiel?"
"Yes?" Castiel was certain his 'heart had just skipped a beat', as humans were wont to say.
"You're dismissed. Unless there is something more you wish to say?" the other angel regarded him with dark green eyes.
"No," Castiel shook his head, an action he had never employed previous to meeting the Winchesters. "No, there is nothing else." He turned to leave, subconsciously tucking his wings tighter against his body. There'd been no message for him, no reprimand or call to meet.
Castiel quickened his pace. Maybe, just maybe—just this once—God had been too busy to notice his moment of weakness. He doubted it. But maybe... maybe there wouldn't be any backlash this time.
He could only hope.

End.
