Dallas Winston, 17, passed away on October 14th. Dallas, "Dally" Winston was born and raised in New York. Dallas was known by Tulsa for his time in jail, but his friends knew him differently. Keith Matthews had told us that Dallas was nice when he wanted to be, but he was always acting tough. Just days before his untimely death he had one of the "Criminals turned heroes." Ponyboy Curtis had described him as being gallant for saving Johnny Cade, 16, after a piece of timber had struck him on the back. In the fire Dallas had burnt his arm saving both Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade after they both heroically saved a group of students on a field trip.
A nurse at the local hospital said that on the night of his death that he had threatened his way out of the hospital. He wanted to fight in a "rumble". Shortly after the fight had ended he'd driven Ponyboy to the hospital. He had witnessed Johnny Cade's death. We were informed that Dallas had cracked. Ponyboy had told us that he had stormed out of the hospital. He had stormed off to the nearest store with a gun, which was later noted that it had been unloaded. Dallas Winston, who was noted just days before for being a hero, had robbed a bank. When he was attempting to outrun the police he had called his friends to tell them what he had done, and that he was headed for the local park. A few moments later Dallas was shot down, causing his death. Dallas Winston may be remembered as a hero to many. Others may think of him as a delinquent with no future. He had done his share of bad things, but he had saved a life. He will be missed.
