A/N: I know, I have my other story to work on. But this wouldn't leave me alone! Anyway, in canon, Kyo's full name is Usui Kyo, so I just had him own only part of it at the beginning of my story. I haven't read all of Black Bird, so I'm sorry if it's awful. And, if you haven't already, you must read Natsume Yuujinchou! It's one of my favorites. You won't really understand the story if you don't know these two universes, so once again, I apologize if you don't like it. It's a tad...obscure. Toodles!

His Name and his Rank

Kyo really didn't want to leave her. He loved her, even as a child. Misao would have to grow up without him, frightened by the spirits she saw and threatened by what she was. He had to leave, in order to keep their promise of marriage. He couldn't take her as his wife until he was the leader of his family. And he couldn't be the true leader of his family until he got his name back from Reiko and her 'Book of Friends'. He had to have his true name, not his incomplete 'Kyo'.

Kyo had given Reiko his name because she was just a hurt little girl who could see him. She had asked for it, traded for it, and had broken her word. Now, he wanted it back. It belonged to another little girl who could see him, to the girl he had already gifted with his heart.

When he found Reiko, it turned out to be a young boy, instead. The boy was Reiko's grandson, Reiko had died years ago. Kyo was surprised at the time that had passed.

Kyo was ready to fight the boy, Natsume, for his name, and commented as such. The odd-looking plump cat that had been following the boy around changed into a spirit form, large with power and white in beauty. The spirit snarled at Kyo, standing over the boy protectively. Kyo was shocked, curious at the renowned spirit who so quickly protected a human as he would protect Misao.

He told them also, that he was prepared to be peaceful, so long as he got his name. Natsume nodded and opened the green, rectangular book he carried with him. The pages flipped of their own accord until one stood up, isolated from the others. Natsume carefully ripped this page out and held it up to his mouth, holding it with his lips. He took a breath, then exhaled. With the exhalation, the black, thick words on the page lifted and floated, on a breeze, toward Kyo. The moment was calm; hopeful. Natsume's closed eyes and careful expression as he returned the name seemed so intimate that Kyo felt almost as if he shouldn't witness it.

Kyo took a breath of relief as he felt his name flowing into him, accompanied by the smudge of Natsume's power that had been bonded to the name. With the return finished, the boy haunched over as if fatigued. The powerful spirit leaned into Natsume, supporting his weight and stared piercingly, meaningfully at Kyo.

Kyo sighed gratefully and nodded. Now he was leader of his family, now he had a name, and now he could go back to Misao.

"Thank you. Good luck with your human, Madara," he said. The spirit nodded back at Kyo, his tail curling almost lovingly around the boy, Natsume.

"And you, Usui."
