Summary: Enough pavement and she will figure it out
Summer smelled sweet of barbecues and flowers, of hope and heat. The asphalt would soak it up and radiate it back; happiness was the summer staple. She claimed patrol but kept her stake safely holstered in the back pocket of her jeans. This was her time, quiet darkness in which to gather the broken pieces of her life.
She would sift through them as she strolled along sidewalks, kicking pebbles on the way. Her mind jumbled thoughts together and she tried to form a connection, see a pattern in the sporatic, Angel, Faith, the mayor, graduation day. It was like awaking from a dream, and somehow all of Sunnydale felt fake, that if she listened hard enough she could hear the constant sounds of cars out side her window and when she woke she would be back in LA, back at Hemery, back where she belonged.
Some nights she wished it would rain, and others heat lightening would entertain her, and still some other nights she would pretend to be that other girl, that other Buffy. Then there was no broken heart, no love of her life deserting her, no friend she had stabbed in the gut. She hated to think of Angel, and hated more to think of Faith. In the daylight with the others she could confront those demons, night was her time to blur the lines.
Given enough miles of pavement she knew she could figure it out. For right now she was just a girl out for a walk.
