A/N: I just love this anime. There is so much thematic depth to it, it's amazing.
Anyway, this drabble one-shot thing was inspired by episodes 25 and 26. If you don't agree with my interpretation, that's fine. I don't care. I merely wanted to explore the depth of Death Note and the great sense of tragedy in episode 25 and 26.
Also, I haven't finished the anime yet. Don't spoil me with the ending.
Sinner and Martyr
Death Note One-Shot
The bells are ringing.
Can't you hear them?
On the last day of the old world, it rains. How fitting.
All of heaven weeps for its loss.
God does not join them. Not yet.
Here we are so high, so high that we could touch the heaven that one or both or neither of us will someday ascend to.
I will go first, whichever way I must.
What separates Death Gods from God is God's ability to love. Death Gods cannot love; it is literally the death of them.
Any true God loves his chosen people. And any true God, more than anything, loves his chosen martyr who dies for God's love.
God loves you, for you are his closest and most precious friend. You are his sacrifice.
Your feet are wet. Let me dry them for you.
Let me remind what could have been. Let me help you remember what potential you had. Let me help you recall yourself before you bit into that tempting red apple, before you were corrupted.
Let me farewell you, my friend that was first and last, beginning and end, alpha and omega.
As the others shall mourn my own mortality, let me mourn for your immortality.
Let me mourn the misfortune your power to kill has brought upon you.
In this instant when you both are soaked with heaven's tears, God loves you. You wash his feet like God's chosen one washed the feet his disciples long ago. You humble yourself despite yourself, and God loves you more than before he ever became God, before he bit into the sweet power that reforms this unsacred world.
You know it is time to farewell. You say so. You sacrifice yourself to the mercy of God.
In this moment, God loves you more than any other.
I knew all along, my first and last friend, because I wanted you to be.
Kira or Kami, it doesn't matter to you. But to me, it makes all the difference.
Your soul is lost. You are consumed.
Hell or heaven has always been your choice, but I never had one.
I will see you again, my friend, my enemy.
Friend or enemy, it doesn't matter to me. But to you, I hope it makes all the difference.
From the time since the martyrdom, the world grows lighter. God's power grows, and the world he seeks to reform becomes sacred. God is glad for your sacrifice, because you were his last obstacle.
Pale skin, eyes that somehow see right through you. The lips move.
Light-kun.
Your hand trembles harshly, knocking around the ice in your glass. The fan on the ceiling whirls around slowly, circulating stale air through the restaurant.
"Light! This is our first date in a while, you could at least try to look a little happier!"
Feign happiness, but all you'll ever have is misfortune.
Misery is so very, very bitter.
God is glad for your sacrifice, because you were his last obstacle.
You are also his first regret.
The bells are ringing so loudly today.
Can't you hear them, Light-kun?
