Just a short story I wrote late last night.
The trouble with Rudy Steiner was that he was so alive. He was brimming with life, hope, and opportunity.
When Leisel Meminger first met him, she was dead, a corpse carrying around a dying soul, slowly fickering out. And he brought it back to life. Rudy Steiner was so brimming with life that with great care, he simply poured some over into Liesel.
With races, soccer matches and teases about kisses, he brought her to life. But when it was her turn, Leisel was thought she was never able to give some back to him, but she did.
Throughout their friendship, she kept Rudy alive without knowing it. When his father was sent to war, Leisel comforted him without knowng it.
He and Leisel were so alive, just as young people should be.
A boy standing in the river, his face scratched and his body freezing, his blue lips asked for something he would never take, for he loved Liesel Meminger so much that he knew he could never ask again.
Her teasing, her quiet secrets, her caring personality allowed him to get through the war.
He died with the bookthief's lips in his mind and her laugh echoed through his dreams with one last word,
"Saumensch".
So let me know what you think!
