Background:
Ichigo was at a week-long spring break celebration with four of his best friends, Renji Abarai, Sado Yasutura, Ikkaku Madarame, and Rangiku Matsumoto. During the week, each person took a turn as the designated driver. But by the end of the week, everyone had his turn, and no one wanted to miss out on the final night of partying.
They made the decision that whoever was the least drunk would drive back to where they were staying. When they were done drinking, Ichigo was chosen as the most sober, and they got into the car with Ichigo driving.
Two miles down the road, Ichigo got into an accident. His friends Rangiku, Sado, and Ikkaku were all killed.
Ichigo and Renji survived.
Ichigo was charged with three counts of manslaughter and spent two years in jail. "I was going to be the first in my family to graduate from college," he said. "I'm now the first person in my family to go to prison."
Ichigo's apology is to Renji, his friend who survived the crash.
