Floors
A fifteen floors flight. Fifteen floors flight. Try to say it fast ten times and it'd get stuck in your throat. Because that was what it felt like as he stood atop of the lift, a karabiner connecting him to the elevator cables, adrenaline still coursing through his veins after the kick of the fight and in expectation of what would come next as he looked upward into the dim liftshaft. Until now, he hadn't doubted this plan. Back in the construct, it had seemed like the idea of a lifetime. Nobody had done this before- that was why it was going to work: surprise them and snatch Morpheus out of their grip before they could say 'LOL, LIEK WUT?'.
But theory and….practice…were two different things. No-one had any experience of this kind of manoeuvre- that could mean it was destined to fail. He had theory - free your mind, then everything is possible- but what in the world was gonna make him believe in it? What had he gotten himself, and more importantly Trinity, into? Fifteen floors, then what?
Security guards. Armed SWAT members. But above it all, Agents. The encounter in the lobby had been like a party, but now they were going up against tougher stuff than bluepills. Or they might aswell not reach that far at all, but get tangled up in something in the machinery and- no, he wouldn't even think of what could happen then.
Tell her to back out of this. NOW!
But he just knew Trinity would refuse. She was so focused on the mission you could've thought it was she who had taken initiative to it from start - and he was happy she was with him, without her the rescue operation would've been impossible to even begin with. There was also another reason he appreciated that his commanding officer had joined him in this, but he could never tell it to her.
All this moved through his mind during the few seconds he spent watching the semi-darkness above. Then he felt something against his chest, and looked down to see Trinity standing just as close to him as that night on the Goth club.
They depended completely on each other now. Carefully he wrapped an arm around her slender waist to hold her against his body, the contact with hers making his heart beat faster. He suddenly felt confident, knowing that she still considered their chance big enough to risk her life on following him. It felt like an honour: two months ago, he'd never believed a self-made woman like Trinity would need or trust him in a situation like this one- he hadn't thought of himself as a soldier capable enough for her to rely on.
Removing the safety lock on a fresh handgun, he took aim at the end of the elevator cable. Resting his finger against the trigger, he thought through this one last time.
Trinity. It was a fifteen floors flight, but with her in his arms he could've jumped to the moon.
I hope you liked it, reviews are very welcome. Many thanks in advantage, and also to those who reviewed 'Teddybear' :-)
