Headless Hermione

Hermione was leaning against the usual tree that bordered the Hogwarts lake. Harry and Ginny were walking towards her looking cheerful, Ron glancing at them happily. Hermione knew that Ron had always wanted Harry and Ginny together. In fact, Harry was the only boy Ron would allow to go near Ginny.

Hermione smiled at them, looked back at her journal--which was currently bewitched to look like her Aritmancy homework to outsiders--and wrote down a few other thoughts before closing and locking it.

"You lock your Aritmancy book?" Ron asked, his eyebrows raised at her as they arived at the tree.

"I don't like people copying my work," Hermione lied simply.

"Anyway, are you going to come with us to Hogsmeade tomorrow?" Ron asked her.

"I was hoping on doing some of my Ancient Runes..." Hermione said slowly.

Ginny looked upset by this news. "Hermione," she said, "Please come. We want you there."

Hermione snorted involuntarily. The truth was that Harry and Ron were so close. And over the last few months, Harry was close with Ginny as well. But Hermione had never belonged. She hadn't in the Muggle world and she didn't in the Wizarding world.

"Really, I don't feel up to it," she said. Lately, Ron had wanted her around. In fact, ever since she had let it slip that Viktor and she were just friends, Ron had been a lot more friendly towards Hermione. It was odd, and Hermione's stomach felt almost fluttery just thinking of Ron.

"Oh, c'mon Hermione...we were thinking of sort of going together...just the four of us..." Harry was saying.

"It's the last Hogsmeade weekend before you graduate, 'Ermione..." Ginny said softly.

"Oh, I know...it's only just...I don't know..."

"Please, Hermione, come with us? I was going to stop by Zonko's anyway. I hear Fred and George sold them a few products, and I wanted to get you a headless hat!" Ron pleaded.

Hermione laughed. "Why would I need a headless hat?"

"So when you're famous, no one will know it's you hidden under it!" Ron said with a grin.

"What makes you think I'll be famous?"

"Oh face it, Hermione, you're going to get about a thousand N.E.W.T.s and twice as many job offers," Ron said.

"Ron, I'm only taking about six more classes than you!" Hermione said, blushing.

"Exactly! And I'm taking way more N.E.W.T. classes than I thought...so you're taking about a thousand," he said, grinning more widely than ever.

"Okay, okay, I don't know why that's supposed to convince me to give up studying, but I'll go to Hogsmeade with you tomorrow," she said. She got up, tossed her book bag at Ron (who caught it), and walked with them into the castle. As she listened to their conversations, she caught herself wondering what it was about him that made her want to go everywhere with him.
