Any Way The Wind Blows
The sounds of explosions and screams fill the air-everywhere she turns there are flashes of colours illuminating what is left of the dimly lit hall, people fighting, and Tonks tries not to think about it as she dodges another flash of green that whizzes past her, think about what any of this means as she stares straight ahead, eyes locked on her target.
He's fighting someone, a hooded figure, and her heart is in her throat as she watches him dodge yet another spell. It's only until she's close enough that she allows herself to raise her wand, let the spell flow from her lips.
"Stupefy!"
The spell hits the Death Eater square in the chest, catches him off guard and he topples over; Remus whirls around, eyes frantic as she searches for her.
"Tonks?"
"Remus," she says, half-sobs as she breaks out into a full run the rest of the way, allows herself to fall into his embrace. He catches her easily, pulls her to his chest, holding onto her as if she is his lifeline; he sighs in relief. They stumble back, Remus leading them to somewhere hidden, secluded, away from the fight, so they can be safe. For now.
He pulls away, enough so that he can grab her face between his hands, eyes searching over her.
"What are you doing here? What's wrong-Teddy?"
"He's okay," Tonks says, as she brings her own hands to clutch at his dusty robes. "He's okay, I left him. With Mum."
"Thank Merlin you're okay. Thank Merlin," Remus breathes as he pulls her to his chest again and there's a battle going on around them and they might die, that much is certain, but Tonks feels like she can breathe a little easier, lighter.
"I'm sorry," she says, but she doesn't really mean it; they both know it. "I know we both agreed I stay, for Teddy's sake but I couldn't. I couldn't do it, the sitting at home like some poor, pathetic, little wife." Remus snorts as he clutches onto her just a little tighter.
This time it's her who pulls away, finds his eyes because she needs him to understand.
"I promised to be with you, for better and for worse. And this is it. This is our worst. This is where I belong, Remus. Next to you. Whatever happens tonight, we'll deal with it, together."
Remus says nothing as he pulls her to him again, sealing their lips in a searing kiss. When they pull away, he rests his forehead against hers, breathing her in, eyes closed tight as if he's trying to memorise this, memorise her.
"You're the most infuriating, stubborn woman I have ever met in my life. And I love you. Merlin, I love you."
Tonks says nothing as she grabs his hand, lets her eyes do the talking and she hopes he'll understand; from the look Remus is giving her, he does.
He holds her hand, squeezes tightly as he squares his shoulders.
"Ready?"
A curt nod. Tonks tries not to think about anything but the feel of Remus' hand in hers.
"Let's do this."
They both hold their breath as they walk together into the middle of the battle, hand in hand, ready to meet their Fate.
(( "You're my everything, Remus. My everything."
And it's not an 'I love you'. But it's more. ))
A/N: I'm not even entirely sure I got the prompt right but it's just a little idea I had and it wouldn't leave me alone so. I wrote it. I tried, man. I swear I did. Hopefully it wasn't that bad. Right?
