Midnight Shadows

~Prologue~

"The more you think of an imaginary problem, the more you think it's real."

Simon grumbled quietly, his phone vibrating on the nightstand beside his bed. He lazily reached his arm out, patting the surface until his hand finally felt his phone. He picked it up, squinting to see the caller ID. Darryl. God, what did he want at three in the morning?

"Đi ngủ, Darryl!" he mumbled, rolling onto his back, phone pressed gently to his ear as rubbed his eyes.

"Can you see them?" He frowned, eyebrows furrowed. The voice on the other end wasn't Darryl by a long shot. "Those shadows that dance around your room. Can you see them?"

"Who is this?" he asked, words slurring together a bit. "It's three in the morning! Why are you calling me?!"

"Look in the darkest corner of your room," continued to being on the other side. "What do you see? Can you see the Shadow People?"

"I don't have time for these games. Goodnight and good-"

"WAIT! PLEASE!" The outburst frightened the still tired enforcer, making him jump in surprise and drop his phone on the bed. "Please, if they go, they'll get me. I don't wanna be alone."

"Look! I am not in the mood for this!" he hissed, gritting his teeth. "If you don't want to be alone, then go to a club or somewhere that is populated! Do not call me and beg for company! Do not call me ever again!"

And with that, Simon ended the call. He placed the phone back on the nightstand, pulled the covers up to his chin, and rolled onto his side. He frowned as he closed his eyes, drifting back into a deep slumber. 'Shadow People'. How silly. Probably another prank call. One of Darryl's friends, perhaps. Whatever the case may be, he didn't have time for it. Sleep was more important than some joke.
