Alcohol
Dean loved Whiskey. That's why Sam chose it as his comforter, now that Dean was dead.
Sam failed to save Dean from the Hell's pit. So he drinks.
He drinks until the hole in his chest is filled up with the liquor.
He drinks until the pain in his heart is replaced by the burning of his throat.
He drinks until his vision is blurred and he can't see the empty bed.
He drinks until he passes out, not giving a damn about being alert or cautious, because unlike Dean, the things that go bump at night are still there.
