The forest calls to me stronger than it ever has before, I feel it like a possessing tide in my veins. A burning need to lose myself in its mossy green depths but I know better. Once when I was much younger I heard the most beautiful of songs, short sweet and solemn. It drifted to me from the darkest shadows of the forest a perfect gift to mark the day of my birth.
I had been twelve years old when I first heard my melody, and after foolishly informing my mother she had locked me in my room muttering on about how she wouldn't let the darkness take me. Of course she couldn't stop me, every year like clockwork I would sit on my crooked swing and wait impatiently.
It had grown longer over time, in some parts less lonely and sweeter but it was still mine, always mine. For six years I lived and breathed for this moment, when the world would fall silent and I would be left alone concealed by nightfall, left to enjoy my secret.
Its bitter sweet notes flooded my heart with forbidden desires and as it came to a close the desire to meet its creator almost became too much. I knew I was foolish, I knew not to enter the forest but that wouldn't stop me from craving it with every fibre of my being.
I winced touching my bare feet to the stone path tentatively before tiptoeing my way back towards the house, the sound of rushing wind from behind startled me as I whipped round only to find nothingness. Laughing nervously I glanced at my swing, in particular the object now atop of it.
Upon closer inspection I found a beautiful flower. Twirling the deep cobalt blue rose through my fingers affectionately, I noticed the pallid loosely wrapped parchment and curiously unwrapped it.
Same time next Friday? Be safe.
The cursive script caught me by surprise at first, but the promise of hearing my melody again, of not having to wait another year made me practically euphoric. I gazed around searching for any sign of my notes mysterious owner before turning back to the house, truly excited for the first time in such a long time.
