Dear mother,
The Eagles tell us that the Orcs are closing in on the mountain as we speak. They say that they have less than a days worth of travel to reach us. But worry not mother, for I will protect Kili to my last breath.
Uncle Thorin has gone mad with the gold sickness. If it weren't for our burglar, Bilbo Baggins of Bag End, then I fear we would have been fighting against Men, Elves and Orcs alike. He took the Arkenstone and gave it to the Men and Elves as bargain for an alliance with us. He did it to give us a chance of survival, but the price he paid was great. For Uncle has banished our friend under threat of death.
The company is done to 13 members again. The cursed number. I feel fear mother. Not for myself but for Kili. Though I will protect him, as is my duty as his elder brother, I cannot help but fear. While I am young, he is younger still. He is barely an adult in the other's eyes. So I fear mother. What if we are separated? If I cannot reach him in time? What if he dies while I survive? I would never be able to forgive myself. I wouldn't be able to look you in the eye and tell you that I have failed to protect my brother, your youngest son.
So mother, please, pray to Mahal that both of us will survive. For I know, that while if one of us dies you will be heartbroken, I cannot imagine how you will feel if the both of us were to die. I will give my best mother. And when the battle is over and the three of us are together again, we shall tell you of our adventures. Of how with a company of 13 dwarves, 1 wizard and a hobbit, we journeyed through Middle-Earth, encountering trolls, goblins, elves, eagles, a skin-changer, spiders, and a dragon. So mother of mine, hope for our future and that of our people.
Your son,
Fili
