We all know how Greg and Shelly died! But do we know why? Was it really just about two rival gangs, namely the "Lost Boys" and the "Surf Nazis", or was there something else behind it?

1. The vampires

Marko had been a vampire for several decades, but something like that had never happened to him before. He stood beside his motorcycle for almost two hours, waiting. Paul had called Marko several times through the mental connection to come to a party on the beach, but Marko was waiting for his lady.

Marko loved this way of life. His brothers and he were only accountable to Max, the head vampire of Santa Carla, but usually, David, the leader of the Lost Boys, did the job. Max was David's sire, that's like a father, superior, friend, companion, and in some cases, the sire is also the lover. Max saw himself more as a father figure, and although he was not the sire of Marko, Dwayne, and Paul as planned, he felt responsible for the younger vampires.

As for the three, David had again defied Max's instructions, and now David himself was the sire of his companions. Marko, Dwayne, and Paul still had a good relationship with the head vampire, but they were grateful to David that the mental connection to Max was weak.

David, on the other hand, always knew exactly where the three were and what they were doing, he was finally their sire. He had gladly taken responsibility for them, they just suited him and his way of life.

Max wasn't always on good terms with his sons, as he always called the Lost Boys, because the way they shaped their nights were very different from Max's conceptions. Max had lived for almost six hundred years, he was a descendant of Count Vlad Dracula, though he had never met him in person. Still, Max did not have a title of nobility, but he always wanted to do something meaningful with his time.

He had built up a variety of businesses over the centuries and was able to make a small fortune. Sine shops were usually relatively small, but incidentally, he had accepted orders from the top city leaders, because that always paid off! So he could keep his secret all these centuries.

David and his brothers were not so interested in business and honest work. They preferred to rush through the city on their motorcycles and wanted to have fun. Well, Max thought it was very amusing at the beginning, but unfortunately, he had missed the right time to put a stop to the younger vampires.

He really understood the needs of his sons because they were young, but he truly wished that they would become a little more solid over time. He hoped that it would not end badly with them, they were far from the first young vampires that would happen, and they certainly would not be the last.

Max's biggest weakness was the yearning for a real family. Although the younger vampires had an understanding of this desire, they still found the idea funny. The Lost Boys knew that Max had a family as a human, his wife Nelly, whom he loved above all else, a son, Jeremy, and a daughter. However, this family was taken from Max when he met his own sire, little Mary was only four years old at the time.

Under what circumstances exactly Max's family had died, the younger vampires did not know. A vampire as old as Max had his thirst for blood under control, he needed blood only twice a week. It looked a bit different from his sons.

David was able to control himself quite well, after all, he had been a vampire since 1906. Max had watched him give some of Senge's pay to a beggar who had a baby with her. David was terrified that the poor woman had to sleep in the street. Max was very impressed by David's generosity, the young man had only been twenty years old.

Marko met David and Max in 1947. He was a Jew, his parents had given him everything they possessed to flee Nazi Germany. Marko had seen many bad things at the age of twenty-two. Neighbors and friends were deported by the Nazis. His family was hidden by a German family but eventually betrayed by the son of the family. Later, it turned out that Marko was the only survivor in his family.

Marko was no longer dependent on drinking every night, but some people annoyed him so much that he was sure he would do a great service to the rest of humanity if he made those annoying his victims.

Dwayne met David twenty years later. His father was an Indian, his mother was not. Dwayne was a half-breed, and he was teased by members of the tribe. David helped him when he was involved in a fight. The tribe celebrated a big party and one of the older men insulted the introverted young man. Dwayne then struck.

Paul met Marko at a beach concert in 1985 when he was twenty-four years old. Both liked the music of Iron Maiden, and that evening there was a concert by a cover band from Los Gatos that played mostly Iron Maiden songs. Marko watched Paul, who was mostly happy and relaxed. The big blonde rocker was alone at the concert and danced. At some point, he smiled at Marko, who was also there alone and the two started a conversation. The next evening they met again and Marko introduced Paul to his brothers, who also liked him. Some nights later, Paul did not go home, he had found a new family that accepted him as he was.

When David told him that Marko, Dwayne and himself were vampires, Paul shut up in shock for the first time. He finally accepted David's blood, he did not care what became of him as long as he could stay with his new found friends. Marko became his best friend.

Max came to Santa Carla in 1979 with David, Marko, and Dwayne. In the early years, the younger vampires lived with Max in the big house. But when Paul came along, it didn't go so well. Max loved a quiet life, and Paul was everything, just not quiet. He kept talking all the time, was joking about everything and everyone, and turned up the music every night. That was just too much for Max.

Paul then showed David, Dwayne, and Marko the sunken hotel, a place no one except Paul ever went, because there in 1906 many people had died in the great earthquake. The locals were sure it was haunted and kept away from this place. Paul, however, liked going there when he wanted to be alone. When his brothers saw this place, they were thrilled. That was the ideal place for vampires.

The rooms of the sunken hotel were largely still intact, the furniture just waiting to be used. Even the expensive floors and wallpaper, as well as the wall lamps, were still there. There was no electricity, but that did not bother the Lost Boys in the least.

They got their personal belongings and clothes out of Max's house and moved into the cave. Max was not very enthusiastic about this idea, but let the cave show, he had never seen the sunken hotel with his own eyes. After the visit, he was reassured, David was right, it was an ideal place for vampires, so he let his sons be.

He understood that the younger vampires wanted a little more independence, and should there be problems, well, he was not far away! In the main room, which Paul had already adorned with all sorts of things according to his ideas, it was pitch-dark at night, which did not bother the vampires, as they could see well in the dark.

However, weeks ago, Paul had brought metal barrels into the cave where it was possible to light a warming fire. Vampires did not feel cold the way people do, but a nice fire made for coziness, as did the many candles that Paul had deposited in the cave over time.

David was the sire of the younger vampires, and the leader of the Lost Boys, but he saw Marko, Dwayne, and Paul as his brothers. David had decided that they were accepted into his delicate family. Not every person was suitable for this life, as a vampire.

The community of the four vampires was for the most part characterized by equality with one another. David, Marko, Dwayne, and Paul did a lot of things together, but everyone had their own space.

David and Paul liked to work on the motorcycles that Max had given to the younger vampires. Sometimes Dwayne helped them, apart from that, the dark-haired vampire liked to read. He was very gifted artistically and carved figures of wood in all sizes. He also had canvases and oil paints, with which he had made portraits of his brothers and Max. Dwayne liked to go for long walks in the woods, or he simply laid himself on top of the cliffs the locals called "Hudson's bluff," and looked at the stars.

Marko was a comic fan, he had all sorts of comic books. He had learned to knit and sew as a little boy, his grandmother had taught him everything. He knitted colorful caps for his brothers and made himself a jacket. It was originally a simple denim jacket, but Marko found it a bit boring but still did not want to part with it as it was practical and comfortable. So he collected all sorts of patches and sewed them on the jacket one day. Marko fastened colorful fringes on the jacket's shoulders, and his one-off was finished.

His brothers envied him a little, especially Paul, he also wanted an individual jacket, but he did not have Marko's talent for such work, and Paul was far too impatient. One night, Marko found a tux coat in one of the rooms of the sunken hotel and gave it to Paul. The tall blond vampire looked at his best friend confused and did not know what to do with the tuxedo. Marko got Paul to try on this jacket, and it fitted so well as if it had been made especially for Paul. The two vampires attached some silver chains to the garment and decorated it with safety pins. Paul was very happy, now he also had an individual garment! Dwayne and David preferred their leather jackets. David still had the black trench coat that he had worn as a mortal young man, and pulled this over his leather jacket. In addition to his memories, this coat was all he had taken from his human existence.

Dwayne eventually realized that he was always messing up his shirts when he drank blood. This annoyed the brunette vampire enormously and he just did not see that he had to dispose of those shirts after having worn them once, so he just did not wear shirts anymore. That's why his brothers teased him sometimes, but Dwayne had a nice upper body, so he did not care.

He found it funny, how eagerly some young ladies looked at him when they noticed his bare chest. Well, what can I say, vampire or not, Dwayne was not a bad guy, so he let most young women down, because the fate that they would expect near the vampire, they certainly did not like, and he finally had no choice - he depended on human blood, whether he liked it or not!

To be honest, sometimes the four vampires enjoyed a good hunt. Some people were just terribly annoying. Especially those who thought they had something better, or gangs terrorizing other people on the boardwalk or on the beach, had been the target of the Lost Boys. None of the four vampires had stood on the sunny side in mortal life, all four had gone through bloody bad times.

In public, the four vampires behaved like late-incubating young adults, deliberately doing so to keep people at bay. They were vampires, and mortal friendships were hardly possible unless a human should be included in the family. This aloofness was important to the Lost Boys, they did not want to be exposed. Mortals would never accept vampires, they are far too afraid. The vampires could not blame the humans, vampires were the most dangerous predators and their food was human blood!

Well, the Lost Boys lived on an equal footing, but there were times when David had the last word - he was ultimately responsible! Marko had got into such a situation. It was about a young woman. Her name was Michelle, or Shelly, as everyone called her. Marko had spotted Shelly at a concert on the beach, and she liked it right away.

Actually, he had followed a petite blonde there when he was foraging. This blonde had insulted two younger girls for no reason at all. Obviously, these two girls did not fit into the beauty ideal of the blonde, that was all.

Marko could not stand people who were so mean to others, so he decided to free man from the arrogant blonde by sucking her life. The vampire followed her to wait for a suitable moment. There were too many people nearby, the boardwalk and the beach were very busy that evening.

The blonde ran ruthlessly through the crowd, constantly bumping into people without apologizing. The young woman shoved aside children who stood in her path, Marko shook his head in disbelief when he saw that - well, she would get her receipt soon!

Marko followed her to the stage on the beach, where a local musician played for the first time. The man was a barn with long brown hair, which he had tied into a ponytail. His muscular body shone in the spotlight, obviously, he was oiled. He tugged a pair of pants that was as tight as a second skin. He sang and played saxophone - the guy was really pretty good, and Marko decided to come back to the concert when he was done with the blonde.

She stood a few meters away from the vampire and seemed to be looking for someone, but this one had obviously displaced the young woman! The blonde turned around after a few minutes with an angry face and wanted to leave the concert again.

Marko tried to follow her and turned abruptly, accidentally slapping the glass from another young woman standing behind him. This young woman was Shelly. Anyone else would probably have been terribly upset, but Shelly just looked at Marko in irritation, then laughed out loud.

When the vampire looked into Shelly's eyes, the reckless blonde was forgotten. "I'm so sorry," Marko apologized, pointing to the cup that had fallen into the sand. "Oh, forget it," Shelly replied. Actually, that was not even my drink, my friend gave it to me before she went out with any guy to take a spin on his bike!"

Marko grinned. "Okay, what do you like drinking," he asked. "I'll buy you a new drink, of course!" Shelly shook her head. "You do not have to," she answered. Marko looked into Shelly's eyes. He could not explain what it was, but something about the young woman was different. She was definitely not a vampire, but she was not purely human either! Marko's curiosity was aroused.

"It's my fault that you have nothing to drink," Marko explained very determinedly, "so I insist on getting a new drink, will you tell me what you like?"

Michelle smiled. "Well, if that's so important to you," she finally said. "I like white wine, and it's boring to hang out alone here, it's nice of you to keep me company after my friend left with a guy!"

Marko nodded. "True, but not just boring," he answered. "It's also dangerous for young women walking alone in the city, there are bad guys here!" Shelly waved. "Oh, you really do not need to worry about that," she explained. "I can take good care of myself!"

Marko did not like that answer at all. Michelle did not even realize what danger she was in. When Marko was overcome by the thirst for blood, there was no mercy, for nothing and no one! But Michelle was lucky that the vampire would satisfy his need for fresh blood that night, but it was not so bad he could not control himself!

"Well, anyway," Marko replied as he strolled beside Michelle to the boardwalk. The young woman now took a closer look at her companion. A strange smell clung to the man, not unpleasant, but strange to Michelle. He was a bit small for a man, but he had a friendly smile and was friendly and accommodating.

The young woman liked the jacket her companion wore, and she wondered if he had sewed on the patches himself. If so, it probably took forever. Suddenly the young woman remembered something and she stopped abruptly and grinned.

"My name is Michelle, by the way," she said, holding out her hand. "But my friends call me Shelly." The man looked at her a little irritated, then he grinned as well. "How mindless of me," he apologized. "I'm Marko," he added, taking Shelly's outstretched hand. Then the two of them went on laughing.

A few minutes later they reached the arcades. There, next to a cozy Italian eatery that Marko and Shelly headed for, was the Frog family business. They sold comic books in the shop, it was the largest shop of this sort in the area. Marko took a look inside, he liked to shop there, there was every comic that his undead heart desired.

The vampire knew that Jane and Marcus Frog used to be vampire hunters, but that was in a time before the couple's sons were born. Marko knew, however, that Marcus Frog trained his sons to vampire hunters. Marko and his brothers were often amused that this crazy family did not realize that "the enemy" was very often in their business.

Marko and David had helped Marcus' sons Edgar and Alan a few times out of trouble when the Surf Nazis, another gang, was making trouble there. Edgar and Alan were still very young, yet they posed no danger to the vampires.

Marko, however, was very sure that the Frog brothers would be serious opponents once they grew up. Still, the vampires did not worry, they were prepared for Edgar and Alan. The Lost Boys loved a good fight against a worthy opponent, and even without Max, they outnumbered the hunters.

Vampires had the strength and stamina of at least ten men, they were fast, they could move silently, and they were able to fly. Their senses were very sensitive, they could overhear conversations that led people who were far away, vampires could see well in the dark, and best of all, that they could read minds and communicate without words using telepathy when they had exchanged their blood with each other.

Shelly noticed the look Marco put into the shop and smiled. "The business belongs to my uncle and my aunt," she explained. Marko looked at the young woman in astonishment. "Would you like to go in and say hello," he asked. "I am a regular customer there, the store is great!"

Shelly shook her head. "No, no, I do not know my relatives," she explained. "My father broke off contact with his sister many years ago, but I do not know why." The vampire smiled again. "Well, the whole family is a bit strange, but hey, I get all the comics I like to read there," he said. "Do you like comics too?"

Michelle shook her head. "No, I read comics as a child, now I prefer a good book," she replied. Marko smiled. "What books do you read," he asked. Shelly looked thoughtfully at Marko. "I like mystery, I like to read vampire stories like Dracula," she explained.

Marko had to grin. He stopped and looked at the young woman. "Do you like vampires, Shelly?" He asked. Shelly wondered that he suddenly looked so reaped. "I do not know," she finally answered with a laugh. "Somehow, they are fascinating beings, as long as they do not come too close to me."

Marko grinned again. "Well, you probably never know that well," laughed Marko, imitating his fangs with his index fingers. "Maybe they are in the middle of us!" Shelly laughed at Marko's suggestion. She was pretty sure vampires did not exist, but then, she existed too.

The vampire and the young woman found a place in the Italian restaurant and spent almost two hours there. They talked about everything, and Marko liked Shelly very much. He did not think for a minute about making the young woman for his dinner.

However, he was also unable to find out what made Shelly different from other women, but Marko would! The vampire has had numerous dates of this kind in the past decades, with a wide variety of women.

He had never committed to a special guy. He felt that every single woman was special. Most of all, he enjoyed the young ladies, who thought they were better than other people. These women would never volunteer with Marko or his brothers, but the four were vampires, they could manipulate people.

Marko liked that, he influenced these arrogant ladies, and finally, they wanted nothing more than Marko. When he reached his goal, he ignored the women. Finally, he let himself be persuaded to have a date with the ladies, but he did not waste his time going to dinner with them in a bar.

He took the woman on his motorcycle to a remote place, refilled his needs he had as a man and then drained them to the last drop. He threw the remains carelessly into the sea, that was it!

For Marko, this type of victim search was the best sport! The more condescending a woman was to him, the greater the challenge! Marko loved the horrified look on women's faces when they realized what Marko really was! In this way, he had done many young women, and young men - as a vampire you were not necessarily committed to gender, everything was possible. So far there had never been an exception. All dates with Marko ended the same way! The people died!

But with Shelly, that was different. Marko had feelings for her, he wanted to meet her again and he wanted her by his side, and he wanted to know what Shelly was!

Marko would like to introduce the young woman to his sire, he needed to talk to David, get his advice. The problem, however, was that David himself had met a young woman.

The Lost Boys had spotted the young woman sleeping in a secluded spot on the beach. Obviously, she was homeless and David offered to come with the Lost Boys. The name of the young woman was Star, and for some reason, Marko felt aversion to her. He could not say exactly why. Star was friendly and funny.

Well, David was the boss and he fell in love with Star, but Marko just did not trust her! Well, with David busy bringing Star into the family, Marko would probably have to turn to Max.

He might as well talk to Paul or Dwayne, but Paul could rarely be serious when it came to women. Paul loved women and found it difficult to kill them. Women who were sucked dry by Paul had to be really nasty to others. Paul almost only killed men. The tall blonde vampire felt women needed to be spared and protected at all costs.

Well, the women also liked Paul because he made them laugh and was always very generous. His pride did not allow women to pay for their drinks, for example. Since Paul could not control his thirst for blood so well, he usually looked at the ladies from afar and enjoyed their appearance.

From time to time, Paul was flirting in Max's video shop with Maria, one of the employees, but he did that for Dwayne, who was seriously interested in her. While Dwayne did not usually have a problem addressing a woman, but if he really was interested, like Maria, he was shy. Well, Paul just liked to put Dwayne on it.

Paul loved the fact that David had invited Star to set up a home in the sunken hotel. The tall blonde rocker had given the advice that the hotel would be much nicer if some female vampires would enrich the Lost Boys' livelihood.

After Marko left the restaurant with the young woman, he offered to take her home. Shelly gladly agreed, for she too had enjoyed the time she had spent with Marko. She wanted to get to know him better, though she felt the man hid something from her.

Marko would have loved to spend some more time with Shelly, but his thirst for blood told him not to risk harming the young woman. "I would like to see you again," Marko said as Shelly got off his motorcycle in front of her parents' house. Michelle nodded, smiling. "What about tomorrow evening?" She asked a little uncertainly. Marko smiled back. "Nine o'clock," he asked back.

Shelly nodded and looked at Marko shyly, she gave him a peck on the lips, then she turned around and went into the house. Marko looked at the young woman in surprise. He had not expected a kiss, usually, he was the one who took the first step.

He waited until Shelly disappeared into the house, then he drove off satisfied. Well, by a stupid coincidence, Marko and Shelly had met. Since that night, the two met almost every night. Marko and Shelly had also made an appointment that evening. As always, they wanted to meet in the small side street where Marko could park his motorcycle.

But that night Shelly just did not show up, and Marko had been waiting for her for almost two hours. Never before had a young woman dared to let him wait so long. Even though Marko did not like to admit that, he was in love with Shelly, he would do anything for her.

That did not change the fact that he was a vampire, which Shelly knew by now. She should know that he was the dominant part of this relationship. Vampires were inherently possessive, jealous and territorial.

A vampire in love was like a ticking time bomb, his protective instinct was aroused, but you should never let him wait, the vampire got angry very quickly! However, Shelly was making that mistake right now, Marko's pride was hurt and he was furious, the vampire felt the need to rip something or someone to pieces.

Marko did not know about the big drama that had happened to Shelly at home. He also did not know that Shelly was not in town anymore! The young woman had not left the city freely!
