"Your dad and Uncle Eddie weren't the only people you left when you went away, you know."
Kat heard the words
fly towards her across the tarmac.
She turned, remembering the stale air of Hale's mother's room, and she knew she was looking at the one person
in her life who was more used to being left than leaving.
"We'll be back soon, baby," Mrs. Hale assured her son as Mr. Hale helped her put on her coat. Hale couldn't help but think back to the moment he had heard her say the exact words. Back to the multiple times his mother had said those words. Of all the times she had not kept her promise. Not once.
The first time wasn't so bad. He was just a naïve little 9 year old who still looked up to his parents. His very rich parents. Each day he watched his father head off to work and he would think I want to be just like him one day. Each time his parents had left him to head off to one of their trips he started looking up to them less and less. He began losing hope.
"We'll be back soon, baby." Hale gave his mother a weak smile and nodded his head reminding himself that it was for business. They did this to help their family. It was the right thing.
He waved good-bye to his parents as they walked out to their limo. He sighed and turned around to face a very nervous looking Marcus. It was Marcus's first time having to act as babysitter to Hale instead of just waiting on him.
Hale looked up at Marcus and gave him a reassuring smile not exactly sure if it was for Marcus or for himself. They'll be back soon. He assured himself. A week tops, right?
Seven months later Mr. and Mrs. Hale finally returned. Hale greeted them with a kiss and hug. He tried to figure out if they were his parents. After all, his parents wouldn't go on a week trip and return 7 months later. His parents wouldn't give him as much as one phone call per week, if he was lucky.
"Sure sure," Hale said brushing his mother off as he headed for the living room, "I'll see you in…what is it? Nine months this time, is it?"
Mrs. Hale sighed and smoothed her sons light brown hair down and gave him a reassuring smile. "Soon."
At that moment, Mr. Hale raised his eyebrows. "Son, you be good now. I don't want to hear about a fire started by W. W. Hale the Fifth at school again."
"Hey, that Secretary really had it coming," Hale countered. A smirk appeared on his face.
Mrs. Hale sighed again and looked down. When she looked back up she looked at her son and whispered, "When did my son become such a…a…" She seemed at lose for words.
"Rebel?" Hale offered. His mother nodded and grabbed her purse. His father walked out the door and quickly gave his son a wave before heading to the limo. Mrs. Hale gave her son one last weak smile before following Hale's father.
Just as the door closed Hale whispered, "When you left years ago, his heart left with you." His parents didn't even hear him.
"Will you be needing anything, Mr. Hale?" Marcus asked softly. Hale turned around to look at the man that had been more fatherly like to him than his own father has been in years.
"Just take me to my family, Marcus. My real family." Hale said warily.
Marcus nodded knowingly exactly who he meant. "Ms. Bishop requests you join her and the Bagshaws in a…heist."
Hale smiled and nodded his head. "I'll be there." He didn't bother to add with my family.
Authors Note: its short I know. But all it was just an idea that I had to write up. I never intended for it to be long anyway.
