Miracle
"Edward?" Jane asked, waking up, expecting to feel her husband sleeping beside her.
Pulling her wrap around her shoulders, she knew where her husband was.
In this nursery, Edward watched his son sleep. James Edward Fairfax Rochester was six months old and the light of their lives. He had never expected to become a father for the first time at nearly forty. He had also not expected to see as clearly as he did. Of course his sight would never be what it was and the scars would never completely heal, but knowing that he could see his child was a source of great joy.
His initial reaction to Jane's news that their child was coming was both exhilarating and daunting. He could not wait to meet the child made of their love, but he also remembered his own childhood and his treatment of Adele before his fairy entered his life.
"You will be a wonderful father" Jane had reassured him.
They had been married nearly two years; those two years had transformed him, as if the past was a bad dream. Adele had become their beloved daughter, as if she was born to them. Then the addition of their son, who to him seemed to be a miracle, a tiny reminder of the blessings in his life.
"Edward, it's the middle of night, what are you doing up?" Jane asked, entering the nursery.
"I couldn't sleep".
Looking at their son, Jane understood her husband. She could not have imagined, the night she had first entered Thornfield, the adventure she would go on or the happiness she was experiencing.
"He is a miracle" Edward said quietly.
"He's our miracle" Jane replied, leaning into her husband's frame.
They watched him sleep for a few more moments, his tiny chest heaving up and down as he slept.
"Come back to bed" Jane said.
Taking one last look at their tiny miracle, Edward followed his wife toward their bedroom.
