A New Life

Ch. 1 The winds were warming the summer fields and the rabbits of Watership Down were scurrying in and out of burrows.

An ordinary sized, brown rabbit, followed by 3 other rabbits, a smaller cream colored one, one the same size that was black, and one larger that was white, scampered their way into the main corridors of the warren. They skidded to a halt in front of two large rabbits of Watership Down's owsla, with scratched faces that showed the scars of many fights.

"You, Lilac, what are you doing here? You should be in silflay right now." said the large rabbit on the right to the brown rabbit.

"Aspen, we're here to see my father." said Lilac to Aspen. Aspen scowled at her. He let her and her friends pass.

Lilac was the granddaughter of Hazel-rah, the rabbit who had led the first rabbits of Watership Down to the warren and had fought off many enemies along the way. In Watership Down, he was thought of as the heir of El-ahrairah.

They hopped down another corridor and came to another large burrow. Lilac stopped her friends and turned to face them.

"Now Poppy," Lilac stared at the average sized white rabbit that had been behind her, "you can't go saying anything this time that would upset the owsla, alright? You know what happened last time. And Iris," she looked from Poppy to the small cream colored rabbit, "don't be afraid of them, they won't hurt you as long as you keep your mouth shut. And I'll need you to stay here Periwinkle." The large black rabbit groaned, but stayed where he was.

Lilac, Poppy, and Iris slowly hopped into the large burrow to meet another large rabbit.

"Papa!" Lilac hopped over to him and the old rabbit acknowledged her presence with a nod of his head and a nudge of his nose. This was Lilac's father and the chief rabbit of the warren.

"Why have you come here?" her father asked her.

"We wanted to tell you that your owsla is getting out of hand. Just this morning, they killed two rabbits who had only just gone out to silflay. This place is turning into another Efrafa." Her father stared at her. "And I think you're getting to old to run the warren." she added as a last thought.

Her father glared at her and then spoke. "You want to take over my reign as chief rabbit. Out!" He shouted and jumped at the three young rabbits standing there. They dodged him and sped out of the burrow.
