Worth the risk

Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto or any of its characters.

They ate together silently, which was very unusual for the two, as they would frequently argue over a variety of matters.

Wow, Shikamaru thought. I'd rather be off on a mission then do this.

"Uh," he began, attempting to bring back conversation. "How's the food?"

Temari looked up, as if she had just been shouted in the ear.

"It's, it's good," she replied. "Though I still prefer Teuchi's noodles any day."

Shikamaru forced a smile. "Yeah."

She released her cutlery. "Are you okay? You don't seem to be yourself."

He looked at her. "I could ask the same thing to you."

"Well I asked first."

"I asked second."

"What does asking second have to do with it?"

"What does first have to do with being obliged to go first?"

"Just answer me already."

"Ladies first."

"Shouldn't the man lead?"

A stare off commenced for a few moments until they both sighed and answered simultaneously.

"I like you."

They both sat there, wide-eyed.

When the surprise had died down, Temari spoke up.

"So what's stopping us from moving on?" she said, trying to keep clam.

"The fact that if something goes wrong, it won't be the same between us."

She smiled. "Still trying to think too many steps ahead."

He smirked. "Forgive me for trying to assess the risks."

She leaned forward and gave him a kiss.

"You know what?" Temari asked, causing his eyebrows to raise. You could still see the happiness on his face from the kiss.

"I think it'll be worth the risk."

End.
