To feel the full reading experience, I suggest listening to a sad version of the song 'You are my Sunshine'.

The war was finally over; Madara was beaten once and for all.

But nobody was cheering. How could they celebrate such a bitter victory?

Nobody really saw what had happened, as it had gone down way too fast.

Still, the result was obvious: in the middle of the battlefield were two figures - a kneeling Sun, holding his dying Moon.

The Moon, Sasuke, had been struck by Madara's last attack, taking a blow that was intended for Naruto, the Sun.

And so Naruto was clutching Sasuke, trying to transfer him chakra, trying to do anything to stop him dying.

None of the others could do anything; the medical ninjas had barely any chakra left, and even if they could use Naruto's, it was much too late. All they could do was stand back and watch.

Sasuke wanted to make Naruto stop crying, to shut him up. He wasn't dying... that was absurd... No... it... it was childish to deny it. This time he really was going to die, and no old man was going to save him.

With immense pain he tried to reach his hand up to Naruto's wet, dirty face, but despite his efforts, he couldn't lift it more than an inch or so. But Naruto felt what he wanted to do, and raised his hand, and placed it on his cheek. It was cold, so very cold, like ice on his hot skin.

Sasuke's pale lips opened and he found that talking was way harder than he remembered.

'D-don't speak. Keep your ener—' Naruto tried to say before his voice broke and Sasuke finally found his own.

Sasuke had no idea what he wanted to say, but his mouth opened and closed, and managed to sing in a very broken melody:

'You are my S-Sunshine... m-my only Sunshine...'

That only made Naruto clutch him harder, 'Shhh, don't strain yourself...'

But Sasuke continued, 'You made m-me happy, when... skies were gre-ey—' he coughed a few times, spitting blood everywhere.

'Sasuke... please...'

'You'll never know... how much I l-l-l—' another coughing fit, then he continued barely audibly, 'I love you,' and he tried squeezing back his Sun's hand, but he doubted he felt anything.

Sasuke felt the last of his strength leaving him and strained to finish, 'P-please don't...' just a bit more... 'take my Sun—'

He went quiet.

Everything went quiet, save for the now silent sobbing coming from the sunny boy holding his dead... everything.

The full moon in the sky quietly set behind the distant horizon as Sakura gently lay a hand on the violently sobbing Naruto's shoulder.
