Quick Author's Notes: We're reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck in school. I just finished it tonight, and I actually loved it enough to write a fanfiction. XD

I'm not quite sure what category to put this in...It's more like "miscellaneous books", but I had to put it in "Book X-overs". Even if it's not a crossover.

Kino cradled the pearl in his hands. It was perfectly round, like a piece of shiny moon fallen from the sky. It sparkled and twinkled and looked altogether innocent, but Kino knew better. He could hear the Song of Evil, rising dark and sinister, nestling itself into his heart until it turned black with greed.

Kino rubbed his thin brown fingers over the pearl. It gleamed up at him, moonlight dancing on its surface. It winked with promises. Kino was filled with desire.

My wife and I will be married in a church...

We will have new clothes...

My son will go to school...

I will have a rifle...

Kino grinned, and his dark eyes grew bright with what the pearl was promising him. The Song of Evil sang on in his mind, an over-coming presence, blocking out everything in Kino's surroundings. All that existed were him, the pearl, and the future. Nothing else mattered at that moment.

We will live in the city as the rich people do...

My son Coyotito will grow strong...

And then Kino saw in the pearl, an image of his son, his small body bloody and his head shot away from the neck...Juana gasping and crying with a look of horror on her face...and Kino saw his own face, slick with sweat and tears, eyes open but not seeing anything but the pearl.

And now, the Song of Evil raged in Kino's ears, and it blocked away all thought, until he staggered and fell and let the blackness in his heart consume him.
