Murphy couldn't remember the last time he'd seen something so beautiful. Thousands of candles filled almost every available surface; the flames flickering in the small breeze through the open door. His eyes tracked the shadows as they danced joyously on the stone walls, rejoicing and praying like the people that filled the pews and aisles.
The church was full to bursting and the sight made Murphy's heart lift. So many people had come tonight to remember the Lord and rejoice in their faith and it amazed Murphy. It was so easy to lose sight of what Christmas really meant; especially now, in a world of presents and parties and pudding. It filled Murphy with a strange joy to see this many people packed into the small church.
It wasn't their church. It wasn't even Catholic, but Murphy couldn't bring himself to care. He just couldn't resist the warm glow and the melodious humming as the choir tuned themselves to the piano. He'd dragged Connor through the door and stood right at the back, listening to the preached as he told the story of Jesus. Connor has stood beside him silently, not questioning nor complaining as they stood through a service that wasn't theirs.
When the preacher finished talking, the choir took over. The song was as familiar to Murphy as his own twin brother, but somehow it was like hearing it for the very first time. The words were filled with passion and joy, the harmonies blending together so effortlessly that shivers raced up and down the dark haired Irishman's spine.
A cool callused hand slid into his and two sets of fingers automatically interlaced. Their lives were tainted now; by blood and death and sex. Their world had become a dark place; so dark that sometimes Murphy felt like he was drowning in it. If it wasn't for Connor he was pretty sure he would have. This service, however, showed them that there was still shining spots of beauty around them. There were still good people and faith and the Lord.
Standing at the back of the church that Christmas Eve, Murphy McManus witnessed the beauty of faith and just how good the world can be. Hand-in-hand with his other half, he left the service with a smile and anew lightness in his heart.
