Prologue

They weren't supposed to be in the woods, especially a three weeks journey from their hometown of Therinsford. They were nearing Carvahall now, only a day away. They weren't sisters but often times that's what they were called because they were inseparable and looked somewhat alike. One was petite, small boned, and a head shorter than the other; she had long curly red hair and piercingly bright green eyes. The other was taller than most, with a strong more broad build, she had long back straight hair, and deep cobalt blue eyes.

They both were thin with angular faces, toned backs and shoulders, with fair skin but no freckles. They both moved with an air of grace and pride that made them seem inhuman, almost elf, though this was apparent more so in the taller of the two, Elisabeth. The smaller one was named Taya. Elisabeth Tillorian and Taya Macalo, they were both fourteen and shouldn't have been, I repeat, on their own in the woods so far from home.

What brought them here? You may ask, as do many, and that begins their story. It all began back in their hometown, Therinsford. The two girls were both farm girls and hunters, they'd go hunting on the edge of the Spine, and they were forbidden to enter it completely. Though the two of them weren't afraid of it like most folk around there, but they still took caution. They were brave, and adventurous, but they weren't stupid.

Elisabeth had no father, and Taya no mother. Taya's mother died from a miscarriage shortly after Taya's birth, at least thirteen years ago. Elisabeth's father's nonexistence was still a mystery though. Some say that he ran away, other's say that he must've been murdered and his body dragged off to the Spine, because he had many few to many enemies in his lifetime.

Either way it didn't change Elisabeth's mother's situation. He disappeared about eight years ago, a few short weeks before winter set in. Without a husband or any sons to help prepare for the Winter and to work enough to feed Elisabeth and herself they would surely die if it weren't for those two girl's early and steadfast bond of friendship. Already at age eight they had been friends for four years. If Taya hadn't pleaded to her father for weeks, if her father wasn't soft enough to give in, and if Taya didn't have a father and three healthy, strong brothers to help Elisabeth and her mother this story would have never taken place.

Taya and her family sold their little farmhouse and small four acre plot of corn and wheat, and moved in with Elisabeth and her mother. Even after the Winter had passed, and the next, and the next, and even after Elisabeth's mother, Maib found herself a job that supported the two of them, Taya's family stayed put, because the families had grown attached to one another, and everyday life with one another. Especially Maib and Taya's father, Bramar, because they had fallen in love.

This though was not the reason why the two girls left, they couldn't have been happier that they'd really be sisters, or at least half sisters. They couldn't have felt so relieved every time Maib smiled at Bramar or vice versa; it made life better, happier. They left for a far greater reason one that will be discussed soon, just have patience. Around a year ago the trouble began, a great and terrible situation that left them changed forever.
