She used to talk on the phone a lot.

It was like clock work; every night at eight o'clock her phone would ring three times before she answered it. And it would be midnight when she was finished.

Of course, that was when he used to call.

Now, she was rarely on the phone. Only using the phone long enough to fnalize plans for the weekend or to answer it when no one else was home.

She used to smile a lot, too.

But that was when they were still friends.

Now, they were nothing but strangers in each other's eyes. They had no idea of whay the other one was up to, both of them not even bothering to ask.

Their friends were puzzled.

What had happened, they wondered.

How could they have gone from close friends to complete strangers, they asked each other.

No one had an answer.

And they hadn't questioned her, knowing that she wouldn't give them an answer.

They hadn't questioned him, either, knowing that that they would never get him alone- what, with the new girlfriend and all.

So they kept it amongst each other. Each supplying one explanation after another, but none of them seemed to be enough.

And so, they schemed.
