It was night in the kingdom of Mirkwood and the light of the moon was being

split apart by the branches of the ancient trees. The silent wind that blew from the West was not the only one that was making the golden-brown leaves shiver. A dark figure crept through the undergrowth, leaving a trail of blood behind it as it sulked through the clearing of trees.

King Thranduil shook his head causing the parts of his crown that were made of blossoms fall to his lap. " My son, you need to fulfil your royal duties to the Kingdom." he sighed .He had said this so many times to his youngest son, and wondered why he never took it in. "Did you hear me, Legolas?" Thranduil asked using the commanding tone of voice that he rarely used with his children. Legolas who was standing by the window, made by two strong Oak trees woven together, merely nodded in reply, not really taking in what his father had said He had hear this speech so many times. Too many, probably... He was far more interested in what was outside the window than in what was being said by his father and Thranduil knew it.

The king rose from his throne making more parts of his crown fall. The velvet folds of his cloak swayed as he made his way over to the window where his son was. Thranduil raised his hand to rest upon his son's shoulder and noticed that Legolas' shoulders were not as broad as his own but just as strong. " My son, you know that soon I will pass over the sea and you will have to take my place on the throne." said Thranduil as he stared at the back of Legolas' head. The prince's hair was very similar to his own mused the king referring to the braids brought from the both sides of his head tied together at the back with a green ribbon, which complimented his son's golden hair.

Legolas did not turn to face his father but he kept staring out the window at the birds flying high over the golden treetops and replied at length " I know father... But as I have said many times before, I find the royal duties are rather dull...." Thranduil bowed his head and replied, "I know you, son, but they must be done." Leoglas was about to answer when three of this father's royal guards came bursting into the room. The king turned and with the same commanding voice that he used with Legolas moments before asked," What is the meaning of this?!" One of the guards clad in the deep green uniforms, walked forward then went down on to one knee. The guard then placed his right fist upon his chest where his heart was and replied " Forgive us, my Lord Thuranduil, but we have found something in the south."

Thuranduil turned to the guard, a strange look upon his face. " Saddle my horse, and take me there." Thuranduil walked with the guard to the door, at the door he removed his crown wreath and gave to a servant who handed him a band of gold, it was Thuranduil's outdoor crown, encrusted with jewels. It appeared to Legolas that his father had forgotten all about him, again. Then to his surprise, Thuranduil spoke to him " Come Legolas, you need to learn how to deal with trespassers." These words made Legolas wonder how his father knew that this thing the guards had found was a trespasser, or merely a traveller who had gotten lost.

Legolas forgot his thoughts when Thuranduil called him to hurry. Legolas walked out of his fathers private audience chamber, two servants dressed a deep maroon, closed the ornate oak doors behind him, and Legolas followed his father out in to the courtyard where the three guards horses, his fathers horse, and his own horse were waiting for them. They all mounted there horses, and rode off to the south, all the time they were riding Legolas was riding he wondered what they would find when they got to the place, where the guards had came from.
