Okay, so this is my first attempt at a Naruto fic. It's based on the song Hello by Evanescence. It can be interpreted as any pairing. XP

Playground school bell rings…again…

He leaned his head against the sturdy tree that held him aloft as the Academy's new bell rang. He thought it amusing that they had installed a bell at all, but it didn't really matter to him at all. She was all that he thought of now. And all that he would think of ever.

Rain clouds come to play…again…

He loved it when it rained now. It was the only time that the whole of Konoha reflected his eternal mood. When they had broken the news to him, he had known that he would never be truly happy again. In fact, he was quite determined never to be happy. After all, there was no way for him to be happy without her, was there?

Has no one told you, she's not breathing?

It had been two days before they had had the courage to tell him. They had waited as long as they could, not wanting to tell him. Eventually, Tsunade had ordered them to tell him. Even after everything he had been through, that had been the worst day of his life.

Hello, I am your mind giving you someone to talk to, hello…

He spoke to no one now. The only conversations he had were with himself. Sometimes, he would imagine that she was there, perched in the tree on another branch and he would think of all the things they would talk about. That is, if she had really been there.

If I smile and don't believe…

He hadn't believed them at first. He had laughed, knowing that it was a joke and she would appear in the doorframe, laughing. Of course they were joking. There was no way on earth that she wouldn't return alive and well from a mission. Okay, so maybe it had been and A rank mission, but still…

Soon I know I'll wake from this dream…

It had to be a dream. That was his second line of defense. This was some kind of nightmare. Any minute now, he would open his eyes and see her lying there beside him. It was the only possible explanation. He didn't have to listen to them, all he had to do was wake up…

Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken…

It had taken them a full fifteen minutes to convince him that he wasn't dreaming. Looking at them, he could see that they pitied him. That fact made him furious. He didn't want their pity. She may have been gone, but that didn't mean he was weak, it didn't mean he wanted these sentimental fools around him. He drowned out their condolences and offers of help, trying to tell them that he didn't need it.

Hello, I am the lie living for you so you can hide, don't cry…

Now he was here. He spent his days, and sometimes nights, in various perches around Konoha. He knew that she would come back. He clung to the belief that they really were joking. Any minute now, she'd be coming around the corner, smiling and laughing. There was no way that she could be gone; no reason for him to cry. It just wasn't possible for her to be gone. This belief made it possible for him to function, at least partially.

Suddenly, I know I'm not sleeping…

Sitting in his tree, he watched the children milling around, trying to get into the Academy. She would have wanted children, he knew that much. He closed his eyes. Ninja did not cry. He would not cry. She's gone. He dashed the tears away angrily. It had only been three months. She had to come back…she just had to… But she wasn't.

Hello, I'm still here, All that's left of yesterday.

He leaped easily from the tree to the ground and looked around, truly seeing everything for the first time in months. His memories of her were still clear. If he had his way, they would never fade.

Gah…I don't have time to check for errors.
