World War II
It was the year 1940, the year in which a war was about to begin. My name is Mary Smith, and I was eight years old. A law had just been passed that all men had to serve in the army in the war against Germany and a man by the name of Adolf Hitler. My father, who was a Royal Air Force officer, was saying his final goodbyes to me and the rest of the family.
"I promise I won't be gone long," he told my mother. I felt a few tears stream down my face. "Now, what is the matter?" my father asked. I knew that I was really going to miss him. I jumped into his arms and hugged him tight as I cried out that I wanted to go with him. He put me down and knelt down in front of me.
"I need you here, to take care of your mum, Peter and Barry. Will you do that for me?" I managed to give him a nod. "That's my big girl!" he said proudly.
"Be safe Edward." I heard mum say.
"I'll be fine" he assured us as he headed to a war van.
"I love you Daddy!" I shouted out.
"I love you all!" he replied. We all watched as the van drove down the narrow road before it disappeared around the corner into the darkness. I hoped to see my father again soon.
But the war lasted much longer than anyone could have imagined. Bombs fell from the sky and tore at the very heart of London. In an effort to protect
its children, the government decreed that they all be sent to the countryside for safekeeping. One night a few weeks later after a terrifying time in the bomb shelter we made our way back into the house.
"Ok Mary, time to go to bed" mum said in a very soft whisper. As we dragged our tired bodies up the stairs, there was a knock at the front door. "I'll answer it" mum said as she handed me a sleeping Peter. After I had put Peter to bed mum came into the room.
"Mary, dear. Will you promise me something?" she asked "Promise you'll watch over Peter and Barry for me will you?"
"What?" I asked shocked.
"You and your brothers are going away for a while."
"Away? Wh-Where?"
"All the children are being evacuated to the country. It's so dangerous here. But you'll be safe there, all three of you." she said.
"But Daddy said that I'm supposed to-"
"I know, dear, but you can take care of Barry and Peter. Please dear, promise me?" she pleaded. I didn't know what to say.
"Ok mum, I promiseā¦"
"That's my girl," mum said hugging me tightly.
It was early in the morning the next day and mum was just making sure that our tags were on firmly so that we didn't get lost.
"I am going to miss you my darlings" mum said as she shed a few tears.
"Don't worry mum, we'll be back soon" I reassured her. She gave us all a goodbye kiss and then led us onto the platform where the train was stationed. We all got on the train just as the trains whistle blew. I leaned out of the window with Barry and Peter.
"Bye mum! See you soon!" I called as I waved. The platform then disappeared from our sight for some time to come.
