Her mind and soul are roadmaps of empty roads filled with dust, he thinks. All the shops that spring up sporadically have 'Closed' signs peaking out from blinds coated with a thick layer of dust. Everything is empty and decaying, places where the sun never shines.
It bothers Ishida. He doesn't really know why it should; there's no use in worrying after someone he barely knows, and the only one this hurts is him. He's got enough baggage to look after without this, too.
Forgetting doesn't work like that though, and it still nags at him.
In the end, maybe it's because he sees too much of himself in her (and being able to see yourself in Kurotsuchi Nemu is never a good thing, Ishida knows), or because he sees too much of what he might have ended up becoming, if the circumstances had been just a little different.
It's disturbing to Ishida, to see himself reflected in the flat eyes of a numbed, apathetic girl, to see what might have been in himself. It's a sickening feeling, to look at someone and to know that you so narrowly averted the fate that has befallen them.
So maybe it's selfish to want to save someone like that. Maybe it's purposeless to try to search for any signs of life in someone like Nemu. But Ishida's not sure it's so selfish to want to see life spark back in those dull, green eyes.
