DM Agnes Loses a Friend

One fine day Agnes was playing in the garden when she found a butterfly on the windowsill. It was lying very still. Agnes wanted to get it flying again, so she picked it up and threw it up into the air, but it fell to the ground straight away.

Lucy who had been watching said, ''Agnes, that butterfly is dead. It will never fly again''. Agnes was very disappointed. ''Come on sweetie'' Lucy said gently ''that butterfly will always be dead, let's go and bury it''. So Gru dug a hole and Agnes lowered the butterfly into it and covered it with soil.

''Agnes'' Gru said, with a sad expression crossing his face, ''Death is a very natural part of life. De real thing is a big difference from playing it in a game''. Agnes nodded. ''I know how it feels'' Gru said gently ''it's pretty normal''.

That afternoon, Agnes cheered up when she saw a familiar looking face on the other side of the street. ''Hello there Agnes'' Abraham called as he passed on his bike. Abraham was one of Agnes's friends from school.

Agnes liked Abraham very much indeed. He was also a big fan of unicorns ''Why don't you come and join me for a cycle?'' Abraham asked. ''Yeah!'' Agnes said. She asked Gru and Lucy if she could. They said it was ok.

Abraham also had an apple tree in his front garden. They were the sweetest juiciest apples Agnes had ever tasted. One day Agnes saw that Abraham wasn't in school, he wasn't even at home. His house looked quite empty.

''Where's Abraham mommy?'' Agnes asked her parents, as she walked in from school with her sisters. ''Where's he gone daddy?''. Gru was shaking his head looking serious and Lucy took hold of Agnes's hand.

''Agnes'' she said quietly ''something very sad has happened, Abraham has been in an accident. He died yesterday afternoon''. Agnes didn't say a word as she switched on the TV. Later on, Agnes just lay on her bed without saying a single word. Later on Lucy came to see her.

''Why did Abraham have to die?'' Agnes shouted ''I don't want him to be dead!''. Big tears began to roll down her checks. ''Nobody wanted it to happen sweetie'' Lucy said, giving her a hug ''it's hard for everyone who knew Abraham''.

A week later, Agnes saw a big black collect Abraham's family. ''They're going to Abraham's funeral'' Lucy explained. ''Dat's to say goodbye to him'' Gru added gently.

Later, Lucy took Agnes to see where Abraham had been buried. ''Is Abraham's body really in there?'' Agnes asked. ''Yes'' Lucy replied ''his body was so hurt it couldn't work anymore''. Agnes planted some flowers on the grave to show her respects.

''Do you remember the time when Edith had the mumps, and Margo found a baby bird that died?'' Lucy asked. Agnes did, Margo had buried the bird in the garden. She stared at the name on the gravestone for quite a long time.

When Agnes got home, she curled up under her duvet. It was the perfect place to sob herself to sleep.
