VENGEANCE IS MINE – CHAPTER 1
The hospital smelled of antiseptic, and the faint beeps of the monitors hooked to the young patients of the Children's Intensive Care Unit could be heard as five Joes walked down the corridor of the unit. Each quiet except for the sound of their footfalls.
The Joes headed to the very last room in the unit, each lost in their own thoughts. Each of them reflected individually on what had just transpired at a remote house. Nestled deep in a forested area, about ten miles from Joe Headquarters, the building belonged to Lady Jaye.
Very few Joes knew much about Jaye's personal life because she kept it private. In fact Flint had just met 5 year old Aiden and 10 year old Emilianna a little over a year ago. Aside from him, Scarlet, Duke and Hawk were the only ones on the team who knew about them. But Hawk was the only one who knew the extent of the trauma of Jaye's past, the personal demons she fought everyday, and the true reason she was raising her brother and sister.
Jaye was sitting in the hospital room of her youngest sibling, Aiden. The little boy called her "Mom", despite the fact they were really brother and sister. Besides Nami, the nanny, Jaye was the only maternal figure he had known. She watched his still form lying on the bed. He looked so small and lifeless in the big intensive care room. If it wasn't for the beeping of the machines and the slight rise and fall of his chest she would have thought he was dead.
Jaye didn't look up at the man who had just entered the room. "How did he find them, Hawk?"
"We are looking into it, Lady Jaye," Hawk answered, as Duke, Flint, Beach Head and Scarlett came in the room.
Flint walked over to Jaye and stood behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders to comfort her. He was confused about the reasoning behind Major Bludd attacking her house. 'Thank God Nami and Emilianna were outside when it happened or they would be here with Aiden instead of at Stalker's with scrapes, bruises, and Emilianna's broken arm,' he thought to himself. He wanted to ask her what Bludd's motives were, but knew that it wasn't the time or the place for discussion.
Beach Head, however, had no such qualms. "Why the hell would Major Bludd attack yer house?" he asked in his thick southern drawl.
Jaye took a deep breath before looking up at him with cold eyes. "For revenge, Beach Head."
Everyone in the room, besides Hawk, became even more confused. Scarlett was the first to recover. "Revenge for what? Allie, what's going on?"
Hawk knelt down beside Jaye and took one of her hands. "Allie Rae, I think it's time you told them."
