Did she always do this?

Did she always talk about her friends this way? As if her friends were her children and she was a proud parent showing off all of their accomplishments? The way her eyes would sparkle whenever she laughed about a past memory she shared with her friends. She always loved to tell stories about her friends. That was just the way Olette was.

Olette was always happiest when she was talking about her friends. A permanent smile would be etched on her face. She always talked about how good Roxas was at skateboarding. She would always talk about how good Pence was with computers.

And me. She never talked about me. No one ever brought me up. I was just a punk who always did his homework last minute, never showed respect to anyone and who would always talk back to any authority figure given the chance.

She couldn't say those things with pride in her voice.

I can hear the disapproving tone in her voice. I could see the dullness in her green eyes. A frown would be present on her lips. She couldn't talk about me the same way that she did Roxas or Pence. And who could blame her.

I don't like not knowing what others think. Even though I am pretty good at guessing what others are thinking, I like to hear them say it. So, I asked her. I asked Olette why she didn't talk about me in the same way that she did Roxas and Pence. And she looked down, shuffled her feet nervously. I could see a small pink hue on her cheeks, and she replied, "Because Hayner. You're special."

A grin formed on my lips. Heh. I'll can settle for that.
