Prologue
It was a week before the celebrations to mark ten years of the kings and queens rule. Only a month before queen Susan had returned from her disastrous last attempt at finding a consort. After her time in Calormen Susan was quite determined that she would never marry, though not from fear of ending up someone's slave as her siblings thought, but rather because while she was in Calormen she had happened to meet a lovely lady among the women of the Tisroc's court who has solidified in her mind something that she had known deep down for many years. Queen Susan had no desire for any man but rather desired women. This realisation and its apparent conflict with the duty of every monarch to provide an heir was weighing heavily on her mind as she set out on a peaceful ride in the countryside around Cair Paravell.
Listening to the peaceful sounds of nature Susan was surprised to hear a child's cry. Dismounting from her horse she walked over to the bush where the sound seemed to have come from. To her amazement there were two small children, one who appeared to be around a year old, the other probably only a few months. The elder child had dark brown hair and was wrapped in what appeared to be a soft pink baby blanket. The younger child had a small amount of red hair covering it's head and was wearing a worn blue shirt.
Looking around Susan could see no other people, the smaller child started to cry again. As if prompted by a ling forgotten memory Susan reached down to pick up the children. "shh sweetie, everything is fine" she whispered comfortingly to the smaller one "I'll find your parents and take you home" "The children's parents are far from here" startled Susan looked up to see a great lion. "Aslan" she exclaimed, and then remembering the child in her arms "where are they, and how did the children get here" "their parents are in the world of your birth and the children were brought here because Narnia has lessons to teach them" "but children need their parents, how can I get them home" "there are many ways from the world of your birth to Narnia, and many ways to travel the other way too, they open when they are needed, the way for these two to return will not open for many years." "then what will happen to them?" "my dear the answer to that is simple, Take the children back to Cair Paravell with you, raise them as your own. They need a loving home and you need an heir." the Gentle Queen gasped "but how did you know…?" "there are no secrets from me and I try not to ask of anyone that which they cannot do." "Thank you" Susan whispered as she looked down at the children, her children now, the elder child smiled up at her and reached up a hand to touch her cheek "Mama."
